I was getting my hair trimmed at Spin’s Barbershop on Interlake and 45th a few weeks back when Spin’s parents, John and Joann Nicon, stopped in. As is the habit at barbershops, we struck up conversation and chatted about their days business.
Both Wallingford born and bred, Lincoln High Class of ’57 and ’60, they’ve been working on what they call a “Greek American Historical Museum of Washington State“: an online collection of video interviews of Greeks in Washington State. It turns out that, from the 1930’s to the 1960’s, Wallingford (as well as Greenwood , Phinney and Green lake) was home to a large number of Greek immigrant families. Thus they’ve had the opportunity to interview a number of long-ago Wallingford residents about growing up in the area (and that’s exactly what brought them to Wallingford that day).
Of course, that set off my “Wallyhood History” bells, and I thought I’d share the links here with you, that include tidbits about Wallingford residents from the first half of the century:
If you’re Greek or interested in learning more, reach out to John and Joann through their web site.
