If you’ve got kids 10 and up who love being out on the water, then you’ll want to check out Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club (SCKC), which meets just over yonder, at the Green Lake Small Craft Center. This Saturday, SCKC is holding an Open House, from 10:00am to 1:00pm, for kids (and parents) to come and see what the club has to offer. Here’s some information from the club:
Is your 5th grader/middle school student looking for a great sport that offers individual achievement as well as the benefits of participating on a team? The Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club is currently accepting new paddlers and will be holding a free “Open House” on Saturday, March 30, April 13, and May 18 at 10 am. No experience is required to join in on the fun! The Green Lake Small Craft Center is located by the Aqua Theater at the south corner of the lake. Parents and guardians plan to stop by for the first few minutes to meet the coaches and submit the consent waiver (click here for a copy), feel free to hang out with other team parents and enjoy the show! After the kids are off the water stay and warm up over a hot dog or veggie alternative with the team while we answer any questions you might have about our spring courses. Last but not least don’t forget to bring a change of clothes in case you get wet!
Wallyhood sponsors Kris and Daniela both have children who participate in SCKC, and Daniela adds, “The Open Houses are a great way to meet and talk to the coaches and get your questions and concerns addressed and for the kids to try out some boats. When they are in middle school, they have the option to make it a serious sport. My son and some of his friends are trying out for the national team in April, for example.”
Kris’s daughter, Sam Murphy, is a coach with SCKC. Here’s what she writes:
I joined SCKC in eighth grade where I trained as a sprint team athlete for 4.5 years. Today I am one of the sprint team coaches. The bonds I made with athletes and coaches while at SCKC are stronger than any I’ve made. My fondest high school memories are those I have with the team, while training here at Greenlake and traveling nationally and internationally to train and race with other clubs. Whether you are Olympic bound or just want to get in shape, the coaches at SCKC personally work with each athlete to help them achieve their goals. Hard work and fun times, that’s what SCKC is about.
