In 2011, Stone Soup Theater debuted the Double XX Fest, a festival of plays written and directed exclusively by women. And they’re back, baby. Join Stone Soup for the Double XX Fest 2.0, running from April 19th through May 6th.
This isn’t your run-of-the-mill, sit down and watch the play and then go home kind of festival. Double XX Fest 2.0 blankets Seattle with 3 weeks of plays, cabaret, spoken word, a 24 hour All Female Play Fest, workshops, solo performance and full-length plays. Need to exorcise some dramatic characters that have been swimming around in your head for a while? Bring your ideas to the April 22nd playwriting workshop taught by the brilliant and inspiring Emily Conbere. Or maybe directing’s more your thing–there’s a workshop for that as well, taught by Macha Monkey Productions founding member Kristina Sutherland. Whatever floats your boat, there really does seem to be something for everybody. All directed by local women, the plays were selected from over 300 submissions coming from all over the world. This is going to be exciting.
The actor Ossie Davis said, “Any form of art is a form of power, it has impact, it can affect change–it can not only move us, it makes us move.” The power of women coming together in this creative endeavor will make us move, indeed. The artistic expression of any idea–be it political, social, emotional, humorous, historical, fantastical–invokes thought and response from those who witness it. Stone Soup Theater consistently brings this creative power to the community through its productions, and now they bring us even more to ponder on and participate in. Check out the Fest and let us know what you think!
