UPDATE FRIDAY, MAR. 9, 2:30PM: Seattle Schools reports a power outage affecting up to 14 schools and the John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence this afternoon. Therefore, they’ve extended the Open Enrollment deadline to Monday, March 12 at 12:30PM.
EARLIER:
Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow (Friday, March 9) is the last day to apply for Seattle Schools Choice Assignment for the 2012-13 school year. That means that if you want to apply to a school other than your attendance area school, including those with Montessori, APP, or Spectrum programs, you will need to fax (to (206) 252-0761), email ([email protected]), or hand-deliver your forms to SPS John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence 2445 3rd Avenue South (3rd and Lander) Seattle, WA 98134 by 4:00pm tomorrow. You can download the School Choice Application Forms by clicking here.
You can click here to use the SPS Address Lookup Tool to identify your Attendance Area School.
You’ll need the following to enroll your kiddo in Seattle Public Schools:
An Admission (Registration) form
A signed Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS)
A photo ID of the parent/guardian registering the child
Two address verification documents (copies of phone, cable, mortgage bill)
Your child’s birth certificate (or passport)
And, don’t forget the other “option”- our region’s K-8 alternative school Salmon Bay. Grades 3,4 and 5 are expanding so there will be openings at those grades as well as the traditional entry points of K and 6th grade. More info:

And this is a good opportunity to point out that most of Wallingford is no longer in the JSIS enrollment zone. That enrollment zone now goes only as far west as Corliss Ave. and as far north as 40th. If you take out the enrollment zone area on the east side of I-5, which traditionally contains very few school-age children, the JSIS zone is now about the size of the Woodland Park Zoo. Meanwhile, siblings as far away as Stone Ave. and 45th St. are still welcome.
Many of us resent the mismanagement of the JSIS enrollment zone the last few years that has led to overcrowding and that despite some overcrowding JSIS had the ability to take more Wallingford kindergarteners this year but was unwilling to make some modest sacrifices in their facilities to do so. The effect is that lots of Wallingford people who have supported the school financially for years knowing that our kids would be going there when they got old enough will be shut out and will be going to schools much farther away with lesser reputations.
There’s nothing that can be done this school enrollment year. The plan got proposed and approved with very little notice to the public. But we urge you to make your thoughts known to Sherry Carr, our School Board representative ([email protected]). I am also in frequent contact with her and School Board staffers to insure Wallingford residents who weren’t lucky enough to get their kid into JSIS before the door slammed shut are heard from when the plan for next year is devised. Your voice would be welcome. Please let me know by return post if you are interested and I’ll let you know what we do from here.
Thanks, Wallingford!
