Good morning, Wallingford! The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning which remains in effect until noon 2PM. All that white, fluffy stuff has been coated with icy rain, which means it’s extra slippery out there. Please take care when you’re out and about!
Seattle Public Utilities has posted on its website that there will be no residential garbage pick-up today, and “weather permitting, garbage, recycling, and food/yard waste service will resume Friday, on a revised schedule — with customers scheduled for pickup today collected Friday, and Friday customers collected Saturday.”
We’ve heard of a few businesses open today, and will add more to this list throughout the day. Also, please give a call to a business before heading out later in the day. Many shops and restaurants may close by 3PM or so before the deep, deep freeze sets in on the roads. Here’s what we’ve got so far:
Coffee
Mosaic Coffeehouse. Pastor Mark Woodward tells us that “Mosaic will be open 9-noon on Thursday. Free pastries and coffee for the homeless community. Or anyone else that needs to get in from the cold for a bit. If you see anyone needing to warm up and have a fre bite to eat send them our way.”
Fuel Coffee (may close early)
Mighty-O
Zoka
Diva Espresso
Lama G’s
A Muddy Cup (opening a little after 10AM)
Trophy Cupcakes. Jennifer Shea writes, “Trophy Cupcakes is open until 3pm. Hot Chocolate and cupcakes, yum. Be 1 of the 1st 10 to say “Snow Day” and receive a free cupcake too!” (updated: 12:52PM: Jennifer wrote to tell us that they’ll be closing at 3PM due to the “State of Emergency.” Yikes!)
Kuma Coffee
Restaurants
Blue Star
Rusty Pelican
Essential Baking
Irwin’s
Varsity Inn
Kisaku
Stores
56th Street Market
QFC
Durn Good Grocery
Banks
Steve over at KeyBank tells us that it’s business as usual, plus they’re serving Chocolati hot chocolate!
Hardware Stores
Tweedy & Popp writes, “Open on time at regular hours (8am – 8pm) as usual; unfortunately, still have not been able to receive our delivery, which included the snow/ice related items, i.e. saucers and sleds, snow shovels and ice melt. We do have gloves, stocking caps, firewood, electric heaters, ice scrapers, etc.”
Also, the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce has announced that its Chamber Luncheon scheduled for today has been cancelled and that “If you registered and paid for this luncheon, your payment will be applied to a future Chamber luncheon or breakfast.”
If you’ve got an open business to add to our list, please let us know in the comments section and we’ll be sure to update this post throughout the day.
I drove to work this morning from Wallingford..it IS icy out there so everyone be careful! Took me forever to de-ice my car.
Key Bank is offering FREE Chocolati Hot Cocoa?!?!
That’s the best thing I have heard a BUB (Big Ugly Bank) offering in a longggg time!
😉
Be safe out there, peeps!
The ice storm warning has been extended to 2pm. Stay home everyone–unless it’s absolutely critical to go out. (Even the sidewalks are like a skating rink!)
And please, leave at least twice as much room between you and an approaching car if you’re walking. I saw two near pedestrian/car collisions in the hood yesterday because the pedestrian stepped out as if the streets were dry.
My street just north of Green Lake is like a toboggan run at 10:33. A few people have driven to work, poor things, but the rest of us are staying put or trying to walk. Thanks for keeping us posted on what’s open. (And Steve!! Thanks for serving hot chocolate at Key Bank. You’re awesome!)
Varsity Inn is open again.
Trophy Cupcakes is open until 3pm. Hot Chocolate and cupcakes, yum. Be 1 of the 1st 10 to say “Snow Day” and receive a free cupcake too!

An hour or so ago when I walked through our lower Stone Way commercial district (in the view of some, a desolate wasteland, but really pretty active if you aren’t strictly looking for office towers), seemed like business as usual. A lot of retail businesses are have done what it takes to get in and open their doors, many more than are on the list. But … looking at the Gypsy Cafe’s web site
(… oops) someone seems to be under the impression they’re in Fremont, so perhaps out of scope of this survey.
Kuma Coffee on Stone Way is open too.
Thanks for keeping us updated. Heading to Blue Star before they close! Or should we go to Rusty Pelican? Hmmm…
Just saw that Kisaku is open again today.
Also, i’m VERY impressed with the dedicated staff of all these businesses. I cannot, will not, and don’t need to go to the office but greatly appreciate everyone in the neighborhood that can.
We just had a terrific meal at the Pelican. First ones in, but there were several tables filled by the time we left.
– Taco Time was closed.
– Rain had taken down the “closed for snow” sign by the time we passed it going home – so they might be opening.
– QFC was a madhouse. My husband notes that a 1/2 gallon of milk is just $1 right now – small enough to haul back down the hill, big enough to get us through the next few days!
Kids on 45th is doing our very best to stay open during the snowy weather. Cold weather gear and indoor games and puzzles still available. Be safe and have fun!
I’d like to express my gratitude to all business owners, home owners, renters, and other all-around good folk who took the time to shovel their sidewalks during this past week. In my mind, you represent the true neighborhood spirit of our community.
When one is on foot, this makes an enormous difference for safety and the ability to get from Point A to Point B without falling down (or worrying about doing so).
I realize that clearing the sidewalks in front of one’s home or business is not the Seattle “norm” (and I really don’t understand why that is). But that’s all the more reason to say THANK YOU to everyone who made this effort. Believe me, it’s appreciated.
Wednesday eve, we walked to Tangletown and encountered quite a few sections of sidewalk that were shoveled. I can appreciate the sentiment but actually found the shoveled sections to be more treacherous than the covered sections. Nearly all the shoveled sections had that bottom layer of ice that made it much more slippery. Traction was better on the snowy sections and it doesn’t hurt as much when you fall.
I suggest shoveling a path on the sidewalk about a foot wide and leaving some snow adjacent so people have options depending on the ice factor. I found myself walking on snow covered grass instead of shoveled sidewalks yesterday especially; I think creating the path is compliant with what is required by the city. Split the difference.
That is a great idea, Nancy M, as yes, the snow and ice may well vary from one area to the next. Your suggestion addresses this wonderfully, and would also work throughout the term of a winter storm. Thank you, and I hope our neighbors take this to heart.
And now, off to check and clear some storm drains in the ‘hood. 🙂
