Teens hold a neighborhood food drive

When Grace and her sister and mom read Nicole Brodeur’s piece in the Seattle Times this week, “For some kids, cuts at nonprofit mean fewer meals”, it spurred an idea: “The article got my sister and I thinking, and decided with some friends to organize a food drive,” Grace wrote to me in an email. “We put up posters around the neighborhood and gave out over 100 flyers. We want everyone to participate in this food drive.”

Lowell Book Drive

Last month, we told you that Lowell Elementary’s Accelerated Progress Program (APP) was moving to Lincoln in the fall, sharing space with McDonald Elementary.

With the first day of school only a few weeks away, Lowell is in need of some books for their reading room and is asking if anyone has any books suitable for grades 3-5 that they’re they’re willing to donate. Some examples include Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, A Cricket in Times Square by George Selden, and the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Last night at the zoo

The weather was perfect for a stroll in the Woodland Park Zoo last night during their Neighborhood Appreciation Event. Though they had 235 RSVP’s for the event, I’d say about 100-125 people attended; and out of those, I noticed a bunch sporting name tags with “Wallingford” written on them.

We were treated to some light fare of fruit, veggies, cheese and crackers, and yummy lemonade while all the kids got to romp on the wide lawn adjacent to the ZooTunes stage. Guests were free to visit the Penguin and Jaguar exhibits, along with their fun new Dinosaurs: Real Close exhibit–complete …

Tug of War Spectacular seeks ‘Team Wallingford’

When was the last time you played a good ol’ fashioned game of tug of war? Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound is looking for folks to form neighborhood teams for its charity event, the Seattle Tug of War Spectacular. The event takes place on Saturday, September 10, at 9:00am in Magnuson Park. They’re looking for someone to assemble 8 tuggers for “Team Wallingford”, which will face off against other neighborhood teams.

McDonald Elementary meets fundraising goal

McDonald Elementary announced that, through direct appeal to parents, they met their fundraising goal of $100,000 to hire full-time language immersion assistants for the 2011-12 school year. The McDonald Elementary PTA followed the John Stanford International School direct appeal fundraising model since the District does not provide funding for an extra teacher for each of the language immersion classrooms.

McDonald Elementary School re-opened last year after a 28-year hiatus. The school is temporarily located at the Lincoln High School site (4400 Interlake Avenue North) until the 2012-13 school year. McDonald will begin its language immersion program this fall with incoming …

Palikka in the park

One night after dinner last week, my family and I headed down to Gas Works Park to meet up with fellow Wallingford resident, Santtu Winter who, along with his friends, created a fun, outdoor tossing game called Palikka. Winter rode up to us on his bike, toting a small canvas bag full of 6″ high wooden, numbered “pins” which he proceeded to set up in a tight cluster on the grass. Then he told my son to take three steps back away from the pins and handed him another wooden pin to throw at the cluster.

Gardening with Ciscoe and Helen

One of my favorite things about summer in lower Wallingford is Helen Glazier’s garden at 3628 Burke Ave. Helen’s garden is like the proverbial box of chocolates: you never know what you’re gonna get. Stupice tomatoes, huckleberries, romaine, Fun Jen, Chinese Pink garlic… lots of stuff!

Meeting neighbors is great fun, too. At Helen’s garden I’ve chatted with Cyrus from Growing Food Growing Community. And Janelle, a neighbor who writes the fantastic food blog, Talk of Tomatoes. And of course, Helen herself is a delight.
