Interlake Public School Days

Ever wonder what Wallingford Center used to be before it was Wallingford Center? Spin back the clock to 1904, and you’ll find them opening the Interlake Public School, the first school in Wallingford (Latona followed in 1906 and Lincoln in 1907).

Interlake closed its doors in 1971 (leaving the building vacant for 15 years: and you thought the Festering Pit at Stone Way and 40th was an eyesore!), so, if we do our math right, that means that students in the last class to graduate would be just old enough now…to ask that we don’t do our math right.

Back in July, we put out a call to artists for an interesting art installation called “Species on the Verge & Other Works w/POV” at Wallingford Center. If you hadn’t seen it during the Art Walk, now’s your chance to stop by the Kerf International Gallery (located inside Wallingford Center) and see the installation through Sept 23rd. Debra Barnes, the creative director for the project wrote to tell us that “The artists are terrific and the universe is smiling.”

Snackdown: Wallingford vs. International District

The Seattle Neighborhood Snackdown has moved to its semi-finals stage and along with it, our beloved neighborhood. Early on in the contest, Wallingford flattened Madrona and then went on to the next level where we bested Fremont. Now we’re up against the International District and so far, it’s a pretty close race. We’ve got until Sunday to lock this down, so every vote counts. Click here to do your part, and Wallingford will soon have another smell co-mingling with the mouthwatering aroma from Satay and the tantalizing tapas from Issian: Victory!

Every year, our neighborhood hosts a number of community arts and cultural events, adding to the funky, artsy, and sometimes quirky vibrancy of Wallingford. Some of these events, including the Edible Book Festival, HonkFest West, and the Seattle Improvised Music Festival (SIMF), receive annual funding through the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs’ Neighborhood & Community Arts program which serves to “Help Seattle’s neighborhood art councils and community-based groups produce annual festivals and events that enhance the visibility of neighborhoods, promote cultural participation, celebrate diversity and build community through arts and culture.”

Wurst Festival

Reminder: today (Friday) and tomorrow they’re holding the 29th Annual Wallingford Wurst Festival at St. Benedict’s School. If you’ve got kids, it’s a ton of fun: so many bouncy-house slides, bouncy-house tumble rooms, bouncy-house obstacle courses, they should call it the Wallingford Bouncy House Festival. That lacks a certain alliterative appeal, though. Plus there’s food, music**, crafts, a biergarten* and all sortsa blingy goodness.

Yeah, the weather may kinda suck, but if you waited around for good weather in this town, you wouldn’t hardly get out at all.

It’s free admission and a fundraiser for the school.
