Back in July, we told you about Catholic Housing Services (CHS) acquiring the former Thunderbird/Fremont Inn motel site to convert the property into low income housing. Yesterday at the site, Mayor Mike McGinn announced a $27 million dollar levy to fund the construction of seven new apartments for low income families, seniors, and veterans citywide, including the Aurora site.
CHS will receive $1.6 million dollars “to construct permanent housing with supportive services for chronically homeless individuals, including veterans,” according to the statement issued by the Mayor’s office. Eight of the 71 units will be set aside for veterans. CHS will also provide onsite services to residents.
While I applaud the use of existing facilities, and think it could be a good return on investment, I sincerely hope that they do not place families with small children there, or elders with mobility issues. Just last night there was a pedestrian accident near there.
Or would they tear it down and start over? Which would be ok or better. With a fenced area for children.
What kind of pedestrian accident? Most pedestrian accidents on that stretch involve people trying to cross Aurora.
Although it is a good point that using the overpass is not much of an option for the mobility-impaired, and the underpasses are not easy, either, if you are coming off Aurora instead of just crossing from Fremont to Wallingford.
I’m thrilled that CHS is taking over this space — what an improvement from the currente graffitti canvas, or the previous drug/prostitution activity!
