We mentioned this earlier this week, but just think it’s so awesome it’s worth a reminder: tonight is the kick-off of what could be a semi-permanent street food pod right here in Wallingford. Sure, we’re never going to be a Portland in this regard, but if there was ever a trendy we can get behind getting all trendy on, it’s food trucks!
From 5 – 9 pm tonight, Friday, CurryNow, Barriga Llena and Buns will be setting up shop in the lot in front of Uptown Espresso (2300 45th St) and serving up some mobile eats. Street Treats, Lumpia World, Big Food, Pai’s, Fusion on the Run and Marination will join the line-up in the future.
Wallyhood welcomes our new food truck overlords.
We went and it was great! Barrage got a little overwhelmed and lost track of our order, but it’s kind of understandable. The curry tacos were the BEST! We look forward to the next time with the other trucks!
Yes please to our very own street food pod!! Woot!
A good addition to 45th! My gf and I went and had burgers and it was fun to sit on the upside-down plastic buckets and do some people watching while chowing down. Hopefully this picks up and sticks around, ’cause one thing Wallingford definitely needs more of is casual style, fast-serve food.
The street food pod last night was AWESOME! When we went about 8::00 2 of the 3 trucks had run out of major food items. The torts truck had no more Fortas and the burger truck was out of buns and lettuce. The line at the curry truck was long but worth the wait. I guess that means it was a resounding success. About the only thing wrong with our experience was the restaurant pricing. As I sat on the curb eating my $10 curry in a plastic bowl with a plastic fork I tought that there have to be some savings when serving food from a truck, but clearly that is not being passed onto the consumer. Ihope it happens again and that more trucks bring some better prices too. Well done Wallingford!
It was a good start, but definitely room for improvement. We went on the early side and the curry truck was, unfortunately, still not ready to go when we walked away at 6:00 – 1 yr old in tow – so not that great for the wee crowd with early bedtimes. Also Barriga forgot the black beans and sour cream on our taco salad which were sort of crucial since that’s what I was intending on feeding the baby. At Buns, for $11, would be nice to get burgers made to order (I like medium rare, not medium well, but maybe that’s a safety requirement for them?). It was nice that Buns brought their own seating and I would love to see more trucks do the same in future. So a few lessons for the future food trucks: 1) Bring lots of food! Wallingfordians love to eat (See ‘Snackdown’ post). 2) Get there on time 3) Get our orders right. 4) Work on pricing.
Correction: I ate the leftover taco salad today and there were beans at the bottom of the bowl. They were refried beans and kind of camouflaged against the bottom of the taco bowl – not the whole black beans I was mistakenly looking for. Pretty sure there was definitely no sour cream, though.
