A few readers have sent us emails over the summer asking us if we’d seen the new sushi place, Shima, over on Wallingford Avenue, next to Babalu. Sure we have, and we wrote about it back in June, but somehow that post flew under the radar, so I’m here to make amends.
Early Friday evening, my husband, daughter and I walked up to Shima and grabbed a table next to the sushi bar. It wasn’t particularly busy, but it wasn’t empty either, as there were three other parties grabbing an early dinner.
We ordered the Mixed Sashimi platter (yellow tail, tuna, and salmon), along with a platter of California and Philly Rolls (cream cheese and salmon), with a giant, frosty Asahi to wash everything down (for me and the hubby, not the child). Everything was excellent, right down to the Daikon Radish, which my daughter ate with as much relish as she would a plate of spaghetti, while the staff looked on with complete amazement. My husband ordered two pieces of Nigiri after our first plates were polished off, and we were pleasantly stuffed to the gills, if you’ll pardon my pun.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Why on earth does Wallingford have yet another sushi spot?” But hear me out: I mean no disrespect for Musashi’s, but there’s always a line out front rivaling that of Molly Moon’s; and since I live in western Wallingford, I like Shima’s proximity. It feels like a great little neighborhood spot, to which the family seated next to us concurred. Shima opened in June by the folks who run Hawaiian Breeze on 45th. The staff was friendly and courteous, everything was fresh and downright melt-in-your-mouth yummy, and the price was decent (our bill came to $42).
Shima is located at 4429 Wallingford Avenue North. Open Monday-Sunday, from 5pm – 10pm. Call 206-632-5283.
No disrespect to musashi’s? Come on, that’s like the worst japanese food on that strip.
@daniel, agreed. Kozue is much better & has the outdoor patio, and Issian is great for when I want to have some grilled bits with my sushi.
I’ll just echo the same refrain I had when Rain opened – of all the possible restaurant ideas, *why* would anyone open another sushi place in Wallingford? Give me a deli, pho, something to replace Jitterbug… but between all the sushi joints on 45th plus Kisaku, this is just a waste of restaurant space.
Interesting. Island Breeze used to be a Pho place. It lasted all of 6 months.
I think Shima is lovely and very family friendly just as you described. I am glad they have joined the neighborhood.
