The Fremont 5K is easily my most favorite road race in town–it’s convenient, it’s mostly flat, the weather’s usually mild, and it has a beer garden.
Undoubtedly, the most humorous part of the event is watching the participants in the Briefcase Relay that takes place just prior to the 5K Walk/Run. Teams of five are dressed in business attire from the waist up, and each team member runs a kilometer carrying the team’s briefcase which, until this last year, held the Seattle Yellow Pages. But this year, teammates will have to carry 5 cans of food in the briefcase, which will then be donated to Solid Ground.
Here’s the course route along with the four briefcase relay exchange zone locations. The race starts at Adobe Plaza, heads up 34th toward Wallingford, where the street changes to N. Pacific. Just after crossing 6 Avenue NE, the course hooks around to the Burke Gilman trail where it continues until 34th at Stone Way, and then runners finish at Adobe Plaza via 34th. Easy peasy.
The Briefcase Relay starts this Friday at 6:00 PM, followed by the 5K Walk/Run at 7:00 PM. The start of the race is on 34th, next to Adobe Plaza. You have until Thursday to register for $30.00 online; otherwise, it’s $40.00 on the day of the race.
Have a great time Margaret. The Briefcase Relay is a blast. Now here’s wishing for more sunshine this weekend!
