Remember when you were growing up and the milk man would come creaking up the dirt road, buggy whip hung loosely over his lazy mare, tin jugs of fresh milk rattling in the wooden cart behind him, thick cream jiggling over the cold white milk?
No, you don’t remember? Because you’re not 125 years old and didn’t grow up in Wisconsin?
Well, here’s your opportunity to get those memories, fresh in 2011.
Wallyhood welcomes Blake the Milkman as our newest sponsor. Blake home delivers milk, eggs, yogurt and cheese for Smith Brothers Farm, and has been for almost 20 years, and he’s always got treats in his truck for the dogs along his route.
What’s the big deal with home delivered milk? What’s so hard about walking up to QFC, Trader Joe’s or PCC? Well, it’s less expensive, for one: the same half gallon of milk is $.50 cheaper when Blake delivers it than picking it up at PCC.
But it’s also fresher. Blake delivers straight from the processing plant in Kent, so it doesn’t sit on shelves. According to Blake, when his customers run out and supplement with shelf milk, their kids complain it doesn’t taste the same.
“There are no contracts or delivery charges,” Blake says. “We provide you with a cooler for your porch where we’ll drop it off.” If you want to make changes to your weekly delivery, you have up until 9 pm the night prior by email or phone message, or just leave a note for the driver in your cooler. You can also skip a delivery any time you want.
As noted above, it’s not just milk, it’s eggs, cheese and more. Blake tells us eggs are his second best seller behind milk (they come from a farm over in Yelm, a name that always made us think of Tevye the Dairyman for some reason).
So, Wallingford, want to try it out? Blake is offering a free quart of chocolate milk and a free dozen eggs to anyone who mentions Wallyhood when they sign up for a month’s service. He also mentioned that Wallingford customers buy a higher proportion of organic milk than any other neighborhood he serves, but feel under no pressure: all the milk they sell is guaranteed no growth hormone / no antibiotics.
On slow days Blake can be found following the Pie-cycle around…
We’ve had Blake delivering milk and OJ for about a year now. The service is great and it’s very easy to change your order if needed. We put a coolant in our milk box during the summer in case it’s several hours between delivery and when we get home.
I’ve always wanted a milkman! I wonder if he can serve apartments…
Blake is great! Not only milk, we get eggs, yogurt, and hearty bread delivered on a regular basis. Saves many trips to a grocery store. So easy!
Katherine, generally we cannot serve apartments but feel free to email me your address and if we can help you out, we certainly will.
Blake delivered milk to us for YEARS and the service and the milk was awesome! We sadly discontinued it just recently due to dairy allergies… I have to say I miss having the milk arrive on Wednesday AMs. It did remind me of growing up – because we had Smith Brothers delivery my entire childhood. I highly recommend Blake to all the regular milk drinkers out there. It’s so much easier than including it in the grocery runs. And I do agree it’s tastier too. Our kids loved it.
Tevye was a dairy man too; delivered milk and cheese and lived in Chelm. Yelim is probably where he moved to after leaving Russia.
Blake – I do enjoy seeing your truck in the hood. I’m not 125, but do remember having milk delivered. When/if Smith sells raw milk, I’ll sign on in a flash.
Blake has been delivering to our place for the last 10 years (since we moved in) and he and his crew are the best! I highly recommend his services.
