Nina Finley, founder of Wallingford-based 4H club chapter, “Cooped Up in Seattle”, let us know about the 4H Poultry Show taking place this Saturday, June 4th, from 10am to Noon at Seattle Tilth’s Children’s Garden, behind the Good Shepherd:
June is Busting Out: Poultry Show with 4H!
- Saturday, June 4; 10 a.m. – Noon
- Location: Children’s Garden behind the Good Shepherd Center (map).
Seattle Tilth’s Children’s Garden is hosting the 4H and the Poultry Show! See young people showing their chickens and water fowl for a special urban livestock celebration.Come to the 4H poultry show with kids participating from all over King and Snohomish counties. It’s Seattle’s first 4H show of any kind (that I know of). Check-in starts at 9:30am, and the show will run from 10 to noon. There will be three competitions going on:
- Fit and Show (aka Showmanship) is the main contest. Kids compete to impress a judge with how well their bird was prepared (bathing, handling practice), as well as their poultry knowledge and handling skill. Basically, four to eight kids line up at a table with their birds, and the judge walks up and down asking things like, “tell me about your breed,” or “please show me your bird’s keel-bone.” Each kid then receives a white (fair), red (good), or blue (excellent) ribbon. The judge also selects a Champion and Reserve Champion showman from each age-group.
- Posters will also be entered and judged, again receiving white, red, or blue ribbons, with Champion and Reserve Champions selected. (Plus some extra awards, like Merit and Judge’s Choice.) Posters can be about any of the club’s 4H projects — poultry, rabbits, sewing, etc.
- Presentations will be given and judged as well. These range from three to fifteen minutes, on topics like “What I feed my Chicken” to “Avian Influenza.”
We’ll also have an information booth, a worm-bin display, and a petting table! We’ll be in the Tilth Children’s Garden, but we have two indoor rooms (the Conference Room and the Ed. Room) available in case of rain. For more info, people can always e-mail me! [email protected]
