Max Krushaar is on a quest to bring pie to the people. The 22 year-old UW student with a double-major in art and theater spends his weekends baking pies and delivering them to residents in the U District and Wallingford by bicycle. He’s been written up by The Stranger, raved about by Cakespy and even has a loyal following on his Facebook page.
He keeps his business small and simple by limiting his pie deliveries to only Friday and Saturday nights (from 9:30pm to 1:00am), and by making tasty pies from Dutch apple to pecan to vegan pecan for just $3.00 per slice (slices for U District residents only) or $20.00 for a 9-inch pie.
I asked Max if this was something he’ll be doing long-term and he replied that though he’s graduating by the end of this quarter, he’s still “tidying up” his credits, so he plans on doing the Piecycle thing for at least a little while longer. “If the option presents itself, then I’ll continue,” he said, “but I never really intended to be a part of the trend. It was never my life goal to start a pie company. At some point I’ll have to focus on my art career.”
So how can you have some amazing pie from The Piecycle? Simple. All ya gotta do is send him a text at: 425.923.6655. Tell him where you live, and ask him what flavor pies he’s got for the weekend (Friday and Saturday only, between 9:30pm and 1:30am). He’ll always have one vegan pie available (which, he said to me, people have told him it’s the best vegan pie they’ve ever had). If you live in the U District, you can buy by the slice for $3.00; however, given that he’s hauling to Wallingford, you’ll have to invest in a whole 9″ pie for $20. If you have a specific flavor request, text a few days earlier and he can be flexible.
Follow The Piecycle on Twitter: http://twitter.com/thepiecycle and Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/thepiecycle. Note that he’ll be “off” this Memorial Day weekend but check in with him the following week to see if he’ll be back to pie-ing!
Thanks for the tip, Darcey!
