One Reel announced this morning that it has secured the remaining $90k needed to produce the 2011 Family 4th at Lake Union. The organization met its fundraising goal of $500,000 with the help of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and a $25,000 donation from Coca-Cola Refreshments – Northwest Region. According to their press release:
Coca-Cola joins a number of Greater Seattle Chamber members who stepped in after March 1st, when One Reel announced it had raised 80% of the Family 4th budget. Coca-Cola contributed the final funds necessary to produce the 2011 event. In collaboration with the Chamber, additional contributions from Honda of Seattle/Toyota of Seattle, Pyramid Brewing Company, Union Bank, Bartell Drugs, Safeco Insurance, Group Health, Salal Credit Union, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle Seahawks, Skyway Luggage, Wurts & Associates and Kinzer Real Estate Services combined with Coca-Cola to close the $94,000 gap.
Woo hoo! Happy anniversary to me! Bringin’ the party right to my house!
YAHOO!! I hope our community finds time to thank One Reel.
it’s too bad that once again, in the midst of so many essential service cut-backs and suffering neighbors in our good community, we have elected to blow up $500, thous. in smoke for the sake of about a half hour of “enjoyment” !!!! surely, we could have found a much nicer and less expensive way of celebrating the 4th and acknowledging our humanity at the same time!!!
not to mention the environmental pollution which falls into the lake as a result of fireworks debri…..
just because these are “private donations” does not mean that this money does not count in the community – it is all part of the same pot – and, the reason we are broke in the first place is that corporations and the rich are not contributing their fair share in the first place…..
Had my husband and I not wandered down to Gasworks Park last July 4th, I might have tended to agree with you, Carol. It is indeed a time of escalating inequities. However, there are only a few opportunities for regular folks and families to enjoy truly free, stupendous public events, and this event, imho, qualifies as one of them. The fireworks are thrilling, the music is fabulous and the wall to wall people are, well, magical. If you can, come down to the park on the 4th and experience it yourself.
well, carol, next time we run into one another at the food banklets plan a donatin tablefor Gasworks on the 4th
