The Sixth Annual Edible Book Festival has concluded. And I’m going to tell you all about it because it was super fun.
First, though, if you have no idea what I’m talking about, catch up here. Contestants created works of edible art that were inspired by books. There was the Caramel Sutra (Bronze winner in the Drop-Dead Gorgeous category), and the Harry Potter Series: the Deathly Ho Hos, The Peeples Almanac, and Ethan Fromage. And many more! While I didn’t manage to get all the artists’ names, I think I got the titles right for the category winners:
- Most Drop Dead Georgeous: Crack Up, by F. Scott Fitzjello, artists Mark Wilson and Mary Welch
- Most Pun-derful: Fool of a Took
- Most Delectably Appetizing: Unberryble Lightness of Being
- Best Young Edible Artist: Sea of Rolls (interpretation of Sea of Trolls)
- Best in Show (people’s favorite): Lord of the Fries (based on Lord of the Flies and Look It’s Jesus), artists Suze Woolf and Cath Carine
If you look closely at the Lord of the Fries photo in this article, you’ll see that Jesus’ image is actually a mosaic made of tiny tiny squares. French fry squares! I asked Suze and Cath how long the mosaic took to make, and they said it took about 4 hours, but cutting all those french fry squares was actually “the hard part.” I can’t imagine.
Props to Valerie Saturen, whose Fast Food Nation was made of fries, veggie burgers (ha!), and ketchup to represent the Great Lakes and major rivers. And props also to Gretchen Lenihan, Mally Haas, and Karina Collins for their very detailed, clean, and colorful baby book pages titled, “What do you see? Gel color, fondant, and brown bears, Oh My!”
And one more: I can’t resist. Avid Wallyhood reader, Laura Vess, who also happens to be my life partner so I’m completely conflicted here and that’s okay as long as I fess up tto it… Laura took the Bronze in the Most Drop Dead Gorgeous category for her entry, “Heart Full of Pies” featuring cherry pies from Fremont newcomers, Pie.
Janet Fryberger (aka. Biblio Biscuit) with the Seattle Center for Books Arts, says they’ll post photos of all entries and a list of today’s winners right here in about a week. The Sixth Annual Book Festival was sponsored by the Seattle Center for Book Arts.
My second time seeing the Edible Book Festival, and I loved it even more! Lord of the Fries was my favorite. I’m embarassed to say that I didn’t get that “Fast Food Nation” was an actual map of the US, not just a pile of french fries with ketchup and burgers on it.
We live in a neighborhood of really clever people! My friend and I have sworn to enter next year: she’ll figure out the book and the pun, I’ll figure out the execution.
Did anyone actually stay to eat? A few entries looked delicious, the rest, not so much!
Hi, Janey! Please do join us next year! It’s a blast. And yes, after the judging they hand out paper plates & forks, and everything gets devoured. Come hungry!
