Eagle-eye Shannon sent over some pictures she just took of a house fire on Corliss, between 44th and 45th, behind Kabul. Seems like everything is under control and there was tremendous response from the fire department. We’ll let you know when we have more information to share. Hope everyone’s ok.
Update, 3/10: We just received an incident report from the Seattle Fire Department. Thankfully, this wasn’t a fire, but excessive smoke caused by a previous fire lit in the home’s fireplace, and a malfunctioning chimney. Firefighters cut two holes in the roof, adjacent to the chimney, for ventilation.
I wondered what that was – multiple fire engines, Police blocking the streets. Good to know it wasn’t a huge catastrophe, although I feel bad for the owner of the house…
Yes, though, thankfully, it wasn’t a fire but excessive smoke caused by a faulty chimney and a fire previously lit in the fireplace. Makes me think I should get our chimney checked!
I guess all’s well that ends well, but if it wasn’t a fire, why’d they cut two holes in the roof?! Like, couldn’t you open a window or something? 🙂 I’m sure Seattle’s Finest knows what they are doing – I shouldn’t back-seat drive (that’s what the guy on the back of the fire truck is for!)

Hell all. This was my house. The firefighters cut open the roof to ventilate because the smoke was trapped in the attic. They also weren’t immediately aware of the problem with the chimney. Had this all gone unnoticed it would have turned into a full on blaze after another hour or so. The temperatures in the walls/ceiling were above 200 degrees. Basically, my downstairs neighbors in our house had a fire going in their fireplace. Neither of us were aware that before we moved in, the landlord had the chimney sealed off, or “decommissioned” as he recently said. Unfortunately, no one had been notified that the fireplace could not be used. All of the smoke was escaping into the attic through a small hole in the chimney, until so much smoke accumulated that it began going into my apartment. I got home just before smoke started coming into my living room. Long story short, the situation could have been much worse and I’m thankful for the very thorough response from Seattle Fire Department!
