Something fishy this way comes, at least if you’re down in lower Wallingford tonight.
Smell that stench? It’s not your compost bin.
Have you ever seen that television show, Deadliest Catch? Sometimes the freezers break or the engine fails or some other mishap occurs and the fish die while the boat is still at sea. Then the captain has to dock the boat so it can be fixed. Landlubbers hate that. Fishermen hate it more, of course.
Chris C, who works near Essential Baking, told us that 30,000 pounds of dead fish are aboard a fishing vessel moored near the Northlake Wharf. He said the stench was noticeable “at least all the way down to Subway” at Stone Way and 34th this afternoon. I walked by at 5pm and could only smell the fish from the shoreline. But now that the wind has died down, holy mother of gawd. Every loose cat from here to Everett is headed this way. And those smart alecks in Fremont better not start calling Wallingford “stinky town.”
We weren’t able to find out how long the fish will be here. But we were able to find some fish jokes to get us through this troubling time.
Update 3/4: Q13 got to the bottom of this story last night. The boat has been docked here for 2 years, but they just discovered the fish hidden within. Clean up is in progress. See the Q13 story here.
It doesn’t smell like fish – it smells like the pulp paper mill at Port Townsend. (Tio the power of ten…) That would be sulfite. Why? I don’t know, but I couldn’t even breathe on the bike trail…
What a lot of pointless deaths :/
Yes, James. Thank you for that.
This can’t be healthy.
Definitely a sulfite smell. I smelled it all the way up to 41st last night. It was sort of wafting about the entire neighborhood.
