Here’s a little bit of trivia: The first Dick’s Drive-in opened on 45th Street right here in Wallingford during a snowstorm on January 25, 1954. A few days later, after the snow melted, they had a re-grand opening on January 28.
To celebrate 57 years of flippin’ burgers, Dick’s is offering 2-for-1 burgers (cheeseburger or regular hamburger) on Tuesday (1/25), between 2-6:30 pm. Buy one cheeseburger or hamburger and get one free (limit 3 free burgers per customer); and on Friday (1/28), Dick’s will be offering 10 cent Cokes (Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Root Beer or Lemonade) all day long.
Happy 57th, Dick’s! One day, I WILL remember to bring cash when I’m out walking and I want my chocolate shake fix!
Happy Birthday Chez Richard!
When I was learning to play the guitar in Seattle many years ago, my class came up with a locavore string-name mnemonic that honors Dick Spady’s Big Idea:
Eat
At
Dick’s
Great
Burgers
Everytime
Margaret! It’s “2 for 1” cheese. IE, “buy one get one free.” Not “buy 2 get 1 free.” That would be “3 for 2 cheeseburgers!” which just doesn’t have the same ring to it. It’s for cheeseburgers or regular hamburgers.
D’oh! Thanks Ron! That was a momentary lapse of brain cells there!
I hate to admit it but I was there at the grand opening. A classmate, David Ghormley, son of one of the owners of Dicks, invited the class to the opening. We got french fries and a coke. We were probably in the 4th grade, attending Interlake Grade School (now Wallingford Center). Years later while in High School we referred to Dick’s as “Ricardo’s Club 19” as hamurgers were still 19 cents a piece. If any of my fellow classmates are reading this I’d love to hear from you.
What a fun video! And Nancy, love that mnemonic!
