Tomorrow morning, 56th Street Market (2201 N. 56th St.) will open its doors for business at 10:00 am. Reader Jimmy A. let us know that he spoke with PJ, one of the owners of the store, who said that while their normal business hours will begin at 7:00 am, they just need a little bit more time to prepare for tomorrow. Stop by at 10:00 am to welcome them to the neighborhood!. Here’s a pic from Jimmy:
Thanks for letting us know, Jimmy A!

Can’t wait. We have high hopes for a new start with owners that care, unlike the previous owners. Good Luck!!
Hurray! I so miss having a store. Meridian Market was a great place. May the 56th St Market have a much longer lifespan as a store.
Lol, Meridian Market was a “great place”? Every thing I ordered from there (Italian soda, coffee, and a sandwich all at different times) were all gross. I’m glad it’s gone and can’t wait to check out the new market.
I loved meridian market, and am excited to see what 56th street market provides. Been waiting for this!
Hmmm, chips, beer, beef jerky. Looks a bit 7 eleven in there…
I appreciated going to the old one and I thought the owners cared.
This will be another new busines sin the area. How about a positive attitude around this? it takes guts and a lot of energy to open a business.
Happy opening day!
It does look kind of 7-Eleven but that might not be such a bad thing as long as there is some produce, dairy, other basics. I think the last place was trying to be too many things – upscale grocery, deli, restaurant, beer & wine – that’s alot of overhead and lack of focus. I just want a place I can get a last minute lemon, onion, quart of milk, etc.
It is rather more like a 7-11 than M&R Produce (for those who remember that fine establishment). But they have milk and bread! No produce, sadly. But it’s a joy to have a store and it does indeed take a lot to open a new business – wish them well.
Sign inside the store says, ” Local produce coming soon.
I dropped by this evening and was thrilled to see that we finally have a new store. PJ and his huge extended family were incredibly sweet and friendly. I Hope that all of us in the neighborhood will try to shop there as often as possible to keep them in business. I want them to feel completely welcome and supported by us.
It does feel a little 7-11ish, but they seem amenable to our requests.
Fingers crossed that they’ll have at least a small produce department . . .
They are just waiting for their produce cooler to arrive. I think it looks great, a neighborhood feel to it and PJ is wanting to listen to what the customers want. Can’t ask for more than that.
We just stopped by this evening and found that the owner and his family were very warm and welcoming, as other posters have noted. I really hope they succeed, and I hope that everyone will do their part to support this small, family-run business. Please try to get past any negative first impressions you might have at first sight, or from the photo above — it’s clear that they are still working to get the place set up and that they do intend to offer produce some time in the near future. I think that the market will evolve and grow over the next year, and, as other readers observed, PJ seems open to listening and adapting to community needs.
My husband also stopped in last night. He was able to get the milk and russet potatoes that I had forgotten. Alas, not the chives but maybe that will come down the road. It’s nice to have a store that close.
2/1 – The owners are gracious and intelligent and genuine. They want very much to know our ideas and concerns. Eric, stop by and let them know what you’d like to see there.
I saw natural and organic foods such as Smith Bros. dairy items including cheeses and eggs, Amy’s brand pizzas, dinners, soup. Macrina bread, great organic chips, good wines. Beyond the front shelves are many high quality organic foods i usually buy at PCC and Whole Foods and some i have never seen before and look forward to trying. A fresh produce area has been set aside and will be installed sometime soon.
The owners, husband and wife, are still stocking shelves. They intended to open later this month but decided to go ahead and start now. This is a work in progress. An opening celebration will be held after the 20th. I am very pleased and encouraged by what i experienced on my first trip to their new market.
