We at Wallyhood have cooked up a new regular feature called Wallybits where we serve up little tasty nuggets of news that aren’t big enough for a main course. So, without further ado, here are the early-November Wallybits. Bon appetit!:
- A reader Sarah writes: “an artist/trick-or-treater left behind a big portfolio of their work on our porch last night. The name on the front reads: ‘Peter Bauer.’ I’d love to reunite the lost works with their owner.” Peter Bauer, are you out there?
- “Bartell Drugs is once again partnering with the Salvation Army to help bring holiday cheer to children in need by collecting new, unwrapped toys during its 7th annual Salvation Army ‘Toy ‘N Joy Giving Tree’ drive, November 15 – December 17.” Next time you’re in Bartell’s grab a toy and stick it in the bin, it’ll make a little kid out there happy.
- “The University of Washington is hosting a football game against the UCLA Bruins on Thursday, November 18 which will be broadcast live nation-wide. Of course, it will also be a weekday evening, which means traffic will be challenging with approximately 70,000 fans added to the typical commute. Montlake Boulevard and NE 45th street will be unusually congested. The game starts at 5PM and peak traffic is predicted to occur 3 to 4 hours before kickoff.” Whatever you do, unless you are attending this game, avoid Husky Stadium on Nov. 18th like the plague. Now, go Huskies!
- “Dick’s Drive-Ins would like to honor all vets and active military members with free hamburgers and cheeseburgers on Veterans Day Nov. 11.” Free burgers in Wallybits, now that’s tasty!
- Finally, very sad news from Gino: “Please keep Snickers, the unofficial greeter of Wallingford Starbucks in your thoughts. He met with a serious accident last week, and unfortunately lost a front leg. He is currently in the hospital, and scheduled for surgery Wednesday.” Laurel, his owner, sent this last night: “Snickers came home this afternoon. He has that great attitude! He already went up the stairs. Wasn’t supposed to, I turned around and he was up there. The neighbor came and carried him down. In the morning I take him back for a bandage change. They did a second surgery yesterday to repair some of the road rash. Best of all he is home! The clinic said he was their best patient ever!”
Condolences, Snickers. We love ya, little guy.

OH Snickers!!! We will miss you for the time being greeting us at the Starbucks! I am glad you are okay! I know it will be a long road but you are a strong, loving dog that can get through this! Leg shmeg…. you are extra special now! Laurel, you are in my thoughts. It must be hard. Snickers is so lucky to have someone who loves him so much!! Hopefully we will see him again soon saying hi to everyone on their way in!
Oh, Snickers! I’m so glad he’s home and recovering. That dog has a wonderful spirit. I hope he learns to bow to his friends with just three legs, and can’t wait until we can once again snorgle him outside of Starbucks.
We’ve been passing on your kind words to Laurel through her friend, Gino. Here’s a note with some great news from this morning:
Laurel and Snickers appreciate all the love they’ve received from friends and neighbors near and far. This morning, Snickers was back at his post, happily greeting all of his friends, and warmly accepting doggie treats from the kids. We’re all glad to have him back!
Glad to hear Snickers is in good spirits!
To the veterans: Show Dick’s your VA identification card (if you have one). If you don’t, I suppose you could bring a copy of your DD-214.
This is the story of one of your Wallingford mascots, SNICKERS. Snickers is often found hanging out in front as the official greeter. He jumps and bows for his Starbucks friends.
Three weeks ago he made a bad decision and ran into the highway in Lake Forest Park. The dump truck driver tried to stop, his tires were chattering but Snickers got caught up as the truck skidded him along before the tire. As he came a stop, Snickers jumped up on three legs to run away. My son Bryce saw the accident from his office, got Snickers in the station wagon, ran red lights and got him to the ACCES emergency hospital in the nick of time. ACCES has donor animals who gave Snickers some of their blood to save him. The Vet said she had never seen such a mellow animal who never cried or whimpered, just did what they asked him to do.
Here we are three weeks later, Snickers is a “tri-pod”, he lost his front left leg. He still has his great smile and wagging tail. HIs Starbucks friends still think he is awesome, and he still tried to bow for them. In another week he will be cleared for longer walks which will bring him back to the start of this story, Snickers at the Wallingford Starbucks.
Thank you for all of your prayers and good thoughts! Best to you, Laurel James
Snickers, I hope you are feeling better each day. You most certainly are the star at starbuck.
