First Wednesday of the month is tomorrow, which means Art Walk time. Honestly, we were a bit surprised that the new co-chairs, Tara Shuttleworth and Katie McCallister, decided to make a go of it through the winter (in previous years, it’s been summer-only). There were busy nights this past year, but also some pretty quiet ones. Add in the certainty of rain during the winter, and getting the crowds out will be a challenge.
Re-Leaf Massage, Seattle Bank, Tangerine, Harold’s Lamps & Shades, Murphy’s Pub and Radiant Med Spa are no longer participating. We’re particularly sad to see Re-Leaf Massage go: not only did they have the best food and interesting art, but they offered free 15 minute chair massages during Art Walk. Sadly, they’ve moved to Fremont.
We’re not sure which of the remaining 22 businesses that are listed on the web site will actually have something up for this month’s Art Walk, but Tara did send us this list of confirmed:
- Teahouse Kuan Yin: Photographer Barry Wong uses palates inspired by his Asian-American heritage – the vibrant green of shiso leaves or the warm reds of pomegranates – in creating his fine art photographs. “In my images, there are echoes of my parents’ kitchen where as youngsters, my sisters and I learned about fresh ingredients and Cantonese cooking. Basic to that Southern Chinese culinary tradition is a reverence for the essence of an ingredient.”
- Windows Art Gallery: “Odyssey Articles” is a unique exhibition, of two emerging Northwest artists: Mayumi Terao and Alison Farmer. The show…is alive with reflections of journeys by sea and spirit, by two very different artists, but close, artists.
- Trophy Cupcakes: Matthew Porter
- Wallingford Center, 1st floor corridor: M. Wynne York, Abstract Painting: “I am focusing on process and layering, which creates a world that is deep and captivating. Each piece depends on its many layers to create depth, light, motion and space. By slowly building up the surface of each work, subtle differences are created, allowing the viewer to get a small look into the world that lies within and underneath.”
- Seattle Mosaic Arts: Mosaic Artist Crystal Thomas is an established mosaic artist from Woodinville
- Oasis Art Gallery: Traversing Realms’ exhibition (click photo for more info)
- Dandelion Salon: Will Alton
- Rain Sushi: Michael Profitt
There’s no official music this month, but Suzanna Wheeler, who will be taking over as the music coordinator next month, notes that Role One (ska) is playing at SeaMonster and Murphy’s has Open Mic night, so there ya go.
Have no fear, starting this month I am opening Synchronicity Massage @ Cutz Wallingford and I will be offering free 10 min chair massages to art walk lovers! 🙂
Let me know if you need any help; probably a little late.
And, not surprised by the drop-outs – the Seattle Banks had zero traffic other than me. Need better promotion.
Role One plays every first Wednesday at SeaMonster, and I’ll be working to bring local musicians to bars early during Happy Hour (i.e. Art Walk time), as well as the usual late-night start of 10-11 p.m..
