Barb Burrill of City Fruit is looking for some folks to serve as fruit tree stewards along the Burke-Gilman Trail in Wallingford. City Fruit is working on a project with the City of Seattle to train fruit tree stewards to care for fruit trees in Seattle parks:
The planning group for this new fruit tree stewards program has selected five pilot parks, one of which is the Burke-Gilman Trail in Wallingford, between I-5 and Gas Works Park.
Each park will have a team of stewards that have been trained in fruit tree care and have agreed to steward the trees for at least one year. If accepted into the program, fruit tree stewards will be asked to make the following commitment:
- Attend one or two meetings between October and December 2010 to provide input into the content and design of classes/workshops. The next scheduled meeting is October 23.
- Attend up to four classes/workshops on fruit tree care between January and June 2011
- Agree to serve as a fruit tree steward for one year (June 2011 – June 2012.) Being a fruit tree steward would involve assuming responsibility for fruit trees in your park; hosting work parties and recruiting volunteers, as needed; and helping to develop a plan for the fruit trees in your park.
We have three volunteers signed up so far for the public fruit trees in Wallingford and would like to have at least two more on our team. This is a great opportunity to learn how to care for fruit trees then get hands-on practice on a variety of types and sizes of fruit trees.
