Readers may recall this past spring when we ran the provocatively titled Save Time – Hire an Immigrant story, explaining how to go about hiring a day laborer, which, in turn, either a) helps provide a source of income for the economically disadvantaged or b) undermines the very fabric of our society by encouraging illegal immigration and suppressing the wage rate of US citizens.
Based on which of the two outcomes above you think more likely and / or important, you may want to a) attend the fundraiser for Casa Latina described below or b) write an angry letter to our government decrying the use of public funds that support organizations that turn a blind eye to such un-American activities.
Celebrating the people and cultures of Latin America and those who work together to create a better future for our community.

Westin Seattle, 1900 Fifth Avenue
Presenting the 2010 Social Justice Visionary Award to
The Honorable Richard Conlin and The Seattle City Council
Master of Ceremonies: Eddie Quintero
Early Bird Registration ends September 15th
Enjoy a wonderful dinner, fine wine, a festive celebration with live music and dancing, and the opportunity to bid on a variety of items, including art, vacation packages, and more all to support CASA Latina’s programs.
It looks like they have a few good auction items (airline tickets, wine packages, professional services), but I’m sure they could use more, so if your business would like to support them, there’s more than one way to get involved in the event. Check out the La Fiesta Del Sol web page on the Casa Latina site for all the info.

I support the cause, but I was rather irritated to find flyers for Casa Latina rubber-banded to the door handles of our apartments last week near 34th & Wallingford. There is a very large “no solicitation” sign at the front of our apartment building you can’t miss walking up to it. Say no to paper waste and annoying your neighbors people.

You may have read about the passing of one of our great activists in the Latino community – Robert Maestas, who was Executive Director of El Centro de la Raza for 30 years. Here’s today’s notice from the Times:
