How about a salmon burger? Or homemade soup and salad? Eaten with neighbors and in support of a good cause?
The Wallingford Community Senior Center serves lunch for all comers on Tuesdays from 11:30 – 1 PM. It’s tasty and affordable.
Margaret Goodman will greet you with a printed menu where you mark your choices. She says she’s been working at the lunch “Forever!”.
Click for menu close-up. Highlights are the Daily Special for $4.50 which includes salad, slaw or fruit, Homemade Soup for $2.25, Burgers for $3.25, custom Sandwiches for $2.50, and the ever-popular Root Beer Float splurge for $2. Beverages and sweets round out the meal, and there are vegetarian options.
The cook is Bob Robbins who says the most popular dishes are “Fajitas or the daily special”. “The special next week will possibly be pasta salad”.
Assisting Bob is Mary Walton who says, “We make a special effort to make interesting salads. For summer that’s a great draw. There’s a different soup every week which are handmade and hand designed! There are also root beer floats every week, and they are big!” “I have a deep interest in helping make the Senior Center a viable place.” “The prices are very good.”
Here is my lunch selection, with Bob and Mary in the kitchen in the background: The Hoagie special with slaw. Also, I couldn’t resist the root beer float. The Hoagie had a selection of deli meats and cheeses with lettuce and tomato, the slaw was chopped fine with chunks of carrot and a nice, tangy dressing. The root beer float was cold, creamy and divine.
Other diners were two ladies enjoying a chat about their grandchildren, and an old gentleman sitting alone eating a bowl of soup. I also ran into Ted Holmes, the Director of Admissions at the Meridian School upstairs: “I’ve been coming here for 10 years. My favorite thing is the Reuben. The lunch is cheap, affordable. It’s fun to hang out with the community, not only seniors but the whole building. It’s a great way not to have to make lunch.”
Lisa Stuebing of the Senior Center would also like to thank QFC for their continuing support of the Tuesday lunch.
I heard there is going to be a new hot dog stand opening on 45th and stoneway. Has anyone heard anything about this? Are they open yet? I was told they are gonna have a few hot dog recipes at good prices.
Sincere thanks to Wallyhood for helping us invite you, our neighbors to Community Cafe’.
Also, many thanks for all of our neighbors who turned out today. We hope you had a wonderful time. Please come back soon and bring friends!
