We reported on Friday that neighborhood was about to adopt a colorful turtle on an intersection close to Hamilton. Well, here’s an update, along with some photos of the nearly completed project:
When I left my house at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, I passed a small group of neighbors armed with brooms to prep the intersection of 41st and Interlake for its transformation.
By Sunday afternoon, I was amazed by the group’s progress: a graceful sea turtle with yellow eyes, and a shell with a geometric pattern in yellow, red, blue, and green was already swimming in place. Blue, white and green bubbles seem to dance and float alongside its flippers.
There were 20 neighbors on hand who were sharing a few laughs, listening to U2 in the background, and munching on sandwiches. With most of the work completed, they began to paint the chalked outline of the images in black.
Check out the newest addition to our neighborhood and let us know what you think.
Beautiful! I want one at our intersection!
It looks AWESOME! I can’t wait to see it in person!!
In one of our design meetings for the Wallingford play structure, we set the kids to work making models (from clay and pipe cleaners) or pictures of what they thought the play structure might look like. At the end, ever one of the images or models included a turtle somewhere. I was very sorry we didn’t include any turtle motif in the play structure. I’m pleased the artist for this intersection has rectified that a bit!
Art makes people happy!!!!!! Wondering does the city have to issue a permit? Mimi
Soooo pretty!!! Cant wait to come see it!
The neighborhood kids have decided that the turtle’s name is Bubbles.
I’ve posted some pix I took of Bubbles yesterday:

We walked by the intersection Saturday to “see the turtle”. It is gorgeous!
Thanks to Margaret for reporting it, and my sincere admiration to everyone who worked on this — it is a treat!
So, what do you have to do to get permission to paint an intersection? Do you need permission from the Department of Transportation?
The short answer to that is “yes” you do need permission.
