It may come as no surprise, but it’s still a sad thing to see. We reported back in January that Meridian Market was struggling: cash flow was poor enough that they were having trouble keeping the shelves stocked, causing a deepening spiral. Up in Tangletown for a meal at the Pour House tonight*, we spotted this note in the window of the market:
We hope they are able to find a good buyer, one who can rejuvenate this neighborhood market. Having a local spot to shop for groceries, instead of having to rely on the big chains, is essential for the health of a community.
* At the Pour House, we had the Mac and Manchego, a barely Mexican but entirely tasty main course, while Mrs. Wallyhood had the steak tacos with crunchy cabbage and tender meat. They easily accommodated a gluten-free switch in the ingredients and Ryan mixed a fine margarita.
So sad. Wally is awesome and the store was such a great asset to the ‘hood. We’ll miss you, Meridian Market 🙁
So sad to see you go Wally, we appreciated your business and your good heart. Best of luck to you.
We will miss you Meridian Market and Wally – you added so much to the neighborhood. I’m sorry sorry it didn’t work out, but wish you the absolute best.
Your presence will be missed, Wally. We hope all goes well with any new ventures!
“Having a local spot to shop for groceries, instead of having to rely on the big chains, is essential for the health of a community.”
I like people and I like small, good things. But this is a bit hyperbolic. People work at QFC and the other corporate-owned stores, too. Smaller and neighborhood-owned are not necessarily better businesses.
