Late night last night was a bad night for Golden Oldies, the old record* shop on 45th St. Mark says he heard a crash sometime after 10 pm last night and that when he snapped a photo this morning, a worker said it was a Jeep:
As Kelley notes, it appears Elvis escaped with his life, as did Chuck Berry. As for their vinyl croonings, we can’t say. You can consult Flickr for a view of the mural, pre-crash.
* For our younger readers, a “record” is a round, black sheet of vinyl that we used to encode music on before there were iPods. It is unlikely you will find Lady Gaga’s latest single in this format.
the sarcastic article seems a bit insensitive don’t you think? What if this were your home?
This is awful. Please follow-up with the status of the future of Goldie Oldies. I hope it can survive this incident, the store is a weird and rare jewel in East Wallingford.
Bummer! Glad I snapped my own photos of the mural a few months ago.
Oh, and I love the note to the younger crowd. (and I don’t think the article is being sarcastic)
Unlikely? Actually, Lady Gaga IS on vinyl.

Hey,
I was at Rancho Bravo Tacos last night and heard a loud crash, a side mirror came sliding down the street. It looked like a Chrysler minivan from the backside. My best guess is that it happened around 2:30. Quite a bizarre scene.
I hope all goes well with the repairs!!
(the posting wasn’t too snarky – just cutesy)
First the dog washing place and now this? thats too bad for Dean and co. I hope they can get the wall fixed asap. And maybe the boys can come back and fix the awesome art???
I drove past at 3:30am and there were two police cars there, a number of people standing around, and a black (I think) SUV of some kind stuck in the building. No ambulance or fire trucks around, so not sure of the state of the driver. I’m guessing drunk and stupid.
By this afternoon, the entire hole was covered up with a nice, quick temporary repair job. Glad to see that! Bodes well for their recovery… and keep the rain out of course!
I too wonder what is going on with cars crashing buildings in the hood. Like the old line: if you don’t like my driving get off the sidewalk. Very sad.
I have my own troubles crossing 45th St. Last time a driver accosted and said I should stay on the sidewalk–guess that wouldn’t help either.
69 and spry
Rumor has it that the driver of the SUV that crashed in GO was talking on his cell phone. Haven’t heard if talking on the cell phone was the case at the dog wash place, but it wouldn’t surprise me. KUOW recently interviewed young adults about texting and driving. One girl was in a near fatal accident due to her texting. When asked if she would continue to text, she said yes. Wish the cops would get more serious about pulling people over doing this now that it’s law.
Nice story over on mywallingford.com about the tow truck driver going way above and beyond to board the place up afterward. Anyone know if the driver was cited, and if so, for what? I think it’s ironic that, right where the SUV went through, there were big arrows in the mural pointing left and right!
Wow! I’m glad Chuck and Elvis escaped major trauma (physical at least, even though Elvis looks a bit worried). During my pre-teen years I spent many happy hours in this building helping my dad (and occasionally even operating power tools!) with his business, Barrett’s Nude Furniture, which referred to the unfinished furniture he built, a new niche business at the time.
Some of my mom’s best friends, and no doubt others, thought the name scandalous, but it was aptly descriptive, and led to enough business that we had to move to a larger building in Greenlake that’s now The Little Red Hen, just across an alley from the future site of the Greenlake Theatre. I got to sit on the back loading dock and watch the construction, a real thrill for a kid,
The building in Wallingford was soon occupied by Sprague Electric, which stayed for decades until Seattle’s B&O (Business and Occupational) tax squeezed them out to the hinterlands, and Golden Oldies took it over.
I wish them the best in their fix-up, they’re a wonderful business. We need every one of our resources for finding old vinyl. I can hardly describe how overjoyed I was a few weeks ago to find absolutely pristine copies of Grace Slick’s (pre-Jefferson Starship) “Surrealistic Pillow” and Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” at a Broadview garage sale.
A bit off topic, but perhaps interesting to some, the best ever Pink Floyd cover band is coming to Seattle early next year. Pink Floyd has given them rights for lots of music, and I was told by a local musician who heard them at the Oregon Country Fair last month that they’re superb, You can check them out at houseoffloyd.com , I’ve got my tickets.
