Green Lake Spiritual Center co-directors India and Steve Holden personally invite Wallyhood readers to the center’s Grand Opening this Sunday, August 1st from 10am – 9pm.
India Holden describes the center’s purpose this way:
“The center is loosely organized around spirituality (not of any one religion, it embraces them all), and is designed as a community center. We are making the space available for anything the community needs and wants on a purely donation basis. People can do session work like healing work, counseling, meetings, workshops, support groups, meditation, classes, sat sangs, etc. Really anything. We want to support people in bringing their gifts into the community and provide the space for that.”
The day begins with a ribbon cutting at 10am, and will be filled with meditation, an Aphrodite blessing, a Bahkti yoga discussion, resource sharing, music, meals (6pm potluck dinner), and more. The grand opening program guide is available here.
They’re located at 125 NE 52nd St, 2 blocks north of 50th and a bit west of Latona Ave NE.
Welcome to the neighborhood, Green Lake Spiritual Center!
Sounds interesting. I wonder what their neighbors (on a residential street with crowded parking problems anyway) think of a business setting up that will bring more traffic to their residential area. Wouldn’t a more commercial space in the area be more appropriate (and legal)?
As a resident of this area, parking has already been stretched to a maximum, and we often have to park far away from our home in the evening.
This type of project, though well intended, needs to be considerate of their neighbors by opening in a commercial area that is designed for off street parking.
Churches have zoning requirements, so do businesses. I guess one needs to define “Spiritual”:

Sure, churches have a zoning requirement. Your house is zoned “Single Family Housing” Did we get an exemption of some kind? I’m sure your neighbors are a little miffed that the added traffic will screw up their already tight parking problems.
BTW – you are in Wallingford, not Green Lake. The Green Lake neighborhood does have a business district by “Green Lake.” Good intentions for a nice business gone awry.
Let me rephrase. I posted these words: Churches have zoning requirements, so do businesses. I guess one needs to define “Spiritual”:
The information below is fine print from lifted from a link to the GLSCO article to illustrate the above:

Ah, sorry Luddite… thought you were speaking on behalf of the center.
Businesses have zoning requirments. Any place that has “Registration and Tuition” seems to be a business to me. Maybe I need to work on my “Control Pattern” needs….
Perhaps having to “park far away from [y]our home in the evening” can be considered a favor from the Spiritual Center for those who don’t get enough exercise.
Will this exempt them from property taxes? If so, I’m starting a church in my basement.
Hey, Doug, I’m with you there. I already have several “Oh, Jesus, this coffee is good” moments every morning. Does that count?
Geez Alan. Don’t you know you’re not supposed to complain about things like parking and homeless drunks (see comments for “Police Activity at Wallingford Park”) in our neighborhood. It’s part of living in the city and you’re just supposed to grin & bear it — according to some, anyways.
Hello dear people, India of Green Lake Spiritual Center here.
First: We pledge not to be a burden on our dear neighbors at all.
I had a vision that I am to help the people in our community bring their gifts to the community and am following that.
As per my vision, everything we do here is donation-based. (Should I teach the Inner Wisdom class here, it will also be donation-based.)
Should we be so blessed as to grow, the perfect space for that will present itself.
You’re invited to meet me in person and chat overr tea and cookies 206.790.2331.
Blessings and namaste,
India
Thanks for weighing in, India! Your pledge is no doubt reassuring, and I appreciate your leaving a phone # here for neighbors who have questions, etc. Best of luck!
Thank you Chris, for the benefit of the doubt and for wishing me all the best. I really appreciate it! The center is open for walk-up meditating every morning from 9-10, should you ever desire a quiet corner among beautiful altars and statues 🙂
Blessings and namaste,
India
Homeless drunks, no. Parking, yes. Didn’t you guys get the guidebook? You also CAN complain about those tree stockings, but you CAN’T complain about sharrows. Though I might have that backwards.
@j. Tree stockings?
Those green bags they put around the baby trees – it’s almost like they’re encouraging them to drink!
