When we think barbeque in Wallingford, we tend to think of RoRo down on Stone Way (and then we get all drooly and glassy-eyed, then we shake our head and snap out of it).
This week, though, we’re thinking Irwin’s, because Linda Fecher is celebrating four years as owner of Irwin’s Neighborhood Bakery and Cafe by hosting a free sidewalk BBQ on Sunday, August 1st from 4 – 7 pm.
Irwin’s has been around for longer than that, of course. Back in 1927, it was Irwin’s Grocery and Market. It passed through several incarnations, most recently the Roadrunner Cafe, until Shannon Matilla, great-granddaughter of the original Irwin, opened Irwin’s Neighborhood Bakery and Cafe in 1997. Eventually, she decided to sell, and Linda, an accomplished home baker and Irwin’s bookkeeper, jumped on the opportunity to take the reins.

Just got back from the BBQ: Delicious and free. Amazing. Thank you Linda and Irwin’s!
I like RoRo but the portions are undersized (especially the sides) and the prices are too high for the portion size. I feel like I’m getting ripped off when I eat there.
