We already know that Wallingford is home to some extraordinary art, but it is also home to some extraordinary artists. Just a month ago I had the privilege of attending an in-home art show down at the corner of 51st and Wallingford. The venue was cozy and comfortable; the show was hosted in Reagan Jackson’s home- in the space of a cleared out living room, dining room, and bedrooms. Reagan combined creative forces with some friends and put together a show featuring paintings, jewelry, poetry, hand made bags, and baked goods. Reagan’s roommate Tina had jewelry featured in the show. Rachel Malinak showcased jewelry and so did Nacala Ayele.
The goal for the show was to raise money in support of Reagan’s next adventure; traveling to Ghana, Spain, and beyond. She will begin her travels through the inspirational guidance of the Agape Spiritual Center. The message behind it all- the art, the adventure, the sharing of creativity- is to inspire individuals to pursue their dreams without hesitation.
There will be another show this Saturday, May 15th, from 3-9pm at the same location at 1804 NE 51st on the corner of 51st and Walingford Ave. This art showcase will also be a fundraiser and a percentage of the proceeds will be going towards Reagan’s trip. I expect the atmosphere will be much like the last- inspirational and beautiful. Several of the same artists will be there in addition to Pedro De Valdivia, and V.J. photography. Take a stroll through the hood to the corner of 51st and Wallingford to check out what some of your kind, and inspiring neighbors are up to. There will be food and drinks, as well as a raffle drawing for a $25 gift certificated donated by the hood’s own Not A Number.
