Gas Works Park and the Burke-Gilman Trail will be pretty busy on Saturday morning, when the inaugural “Heroes Half Marathon and 10K” kicks-off at 7 a.m. The right lanes of North Northlake Way and N. 34th Avenue will be closed to traffic as walkers and runners make their way over to the Fremont Bridge.
The “Heroes Half” is an event organized by Total Health Events of Seattle and raises money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The course covers the Cheshiahud Loop around Lake Union, crossing both the Fremont and University bridges. After the loop, the half marathon continues on the Burke-Gilman trail to Fred Meyer in Ballard, and back to Gas Works Park.
If you’re interested in walking or running the race, you can register in person at Gas Works Park on Friday night between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., or Saturday morning, from 5:00 – 6:30 a.m. The half marathon is $70 and the 10K is $40.
There will also be two fun runs for kids in the park on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The “Tiny Tot Run” is for kids ages 3-8 (parents may run with their children), and is a flat, 200 meter course at the park. The “Sprinter Kids” run is for children only, ages 8-14. The course is 0.4 mile up the hill at Gas Works and down the other side. Either race is $15 per entry.
