Our long, dry year is almost over. On March 21, 2009, the Wallingford liquor store rolled the last case of hooch out the front door and turned the keys over to Archie McPhee.
Four hundred and thirty-three days later, on Friday, May 28, 2010, the store is scheduled to re-open in the shell vacated by Hollywood Video, at 118 N.E. 45th St just across from Dick’s. Hours will be 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Mon – Thu, and 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Regarding our concerns that the proximity of the liquor store to the alcoholic camp-out area by the I-5 entrance and exit ramps is a recipe for trouble (Liquor Returns to Wallingford), commenters seemed that feel that the the cost per kick from the high-octane malt liquors like Steel Reserve (sold by the 50th Street Market) would continue to draw the drunks up north. Also, fears of “late night rowdiness” from the liquor store was quieted, somewhat, by the reminder that the shop closes at 9 p.m.
On another note, the store’s position opposite Dick’s was seen as a potential problem, facilitating the meeting of underage would-be drinkers and over-age would-be buyers.
We, however, continue to see the proximity to Dick’s as a boon. In a bit of “life imitates art”, at our last Wallyhood writer’s meeting, Helen and Patrick showed up with a half-dozen Dick’s vanilla milkshakes, a bottle of Cointreau and a bottle of Bailey’s, a recipe we imagined in a post on these pages back in March.
We can confirm: crazy delicious. The milkshake plus Cointreau combination had a rich, orange creamsicle flavor. The Bailey’s combo is exactly the kind of decadent pleasure you imagine it would be. We are taking nominations for what to call these lovely concoctions.
This post is not endorsed by Dick’s Drive-In Restaurants, Rmy Cointreau USA, Inc, or R&A Bailey & Co, who would all undoubtedly encourage you to drink responsibly before asking if you wanted fries with that.
Boooo concerns, yaaaaay booze
Is Wallyhood setting up a Grand Opening Bloody Mary booth on the sidewalk at 10am on Friday?
Re: Cost per kick – http://www.getdrunknotbroke.com/
Just a note for those concerned: The owners of the 7-11 on 50th have told me they will agree to stop selling the fortified alcohol if the 50th Street Market also stops selling it, which is fair. Unfortunately, the 50th Street Market has not yet agreed to stop selling it. It would be greatly helpful if anyone who frequents the Market for items other than the Steel Reserve, etc., would mention to the owners of the Market (who are also generally the folks running the register) any concerns you might have on this issue. Maybe if they traded in the Pacino pictures, the cobra statues and the fortified booze, they’d be doing better financially with different products…
