My Morris dance troupe (Sound and Fury Morris) will be at Gasworks Park again this year to dance the sun-up on May Day (this Saturday, May 1st). We’d love to invite the neighborhood to join us for some quasi-pagan fun, heralding the coming summer and making sure the crops grow well.
What can you expect at 5:30 am this Saturday? Four teams of Anglophile dancers dressed in their finest kits, dancing to live music (including several accordions, a banjo, drums and at least one tuba) with bells strapped to their legs and handkerchiefs or sticks grasped in their hands. All this performed to the enthusiastic response of hundreds of spectators, many of whom will be decked out in their finest May Day attire like neo-Druidic robes and May Queen crowns. And lots of layers. It can be cold at 5:30 am!
Morris Dancing: Free fun!
And there you have it folks. Several accordions, a banjo, drums, at least one tuba and YOU, at Gas Works, this Saturday morning for some quasi-pagan fun. What, you’re going to tell us you have something else to do at 5:30 am?
Well, not to mention the neo-Druidic robes and May Queen crowns. If only I could get up that early!
