In honor of Earth Day, the Teamsters Local 174 announced that the two-day garbage strike will end Friday morning, and that they will once again pile our trash into trucks, haul it away and dump it into a huge hole in the ground somewhere we don’t have to look at it.
In related news, according to the World Bank, per capita energy use in the United States has not gone down at all in the past 30 years (but blessedly hasn’t gone up, either). Per capita energy use worldwide continues to rise, not fall.
Solar, wind and geothermal power combined accounted for just under 1% of the nation’s overall energy consumption in 2008. Petroleum, coal and natural gas accounted for 84%.
If your garbage pick-up was skipped Wednesday or Thursday, the city will allow you double your usual allowance next week.
