They’re back!

It’s official, the pledge drive to bring back the Lake Union fireworks in 2010 has crested the $500,000 mark. They’re back on. See MyNorthWest.com for the tally. This still leaves a question mark with regards to the 2011 fireworks display, which is unlikely to get the same pledge drive activity, but hey, that’s next year.

Maybe Fireworks After All?

There’s a chance we may get a fireworks display over Lake Union after all (see Fireworks Canceled). After One Reel announced that a sponsor would have to come up with a cool half million to get the fireworks back on track, KIRO’s Dave Ross and famed chef Tom Douglas kicked off a pledge drive with $5,000. Microsoft and Starbucks have offered to match donations of $125,000 each, and dozens of businesses have stepped up to the challenge.

As of this writing, MyNorthWest.com has the total at $182,200 pledged, leaving just $67,800 to go to trigger the Microsoft and Starbuck’s matching …

Nike man, using that PSP?

The Seattle Crime blog is reporting an attempted robbery last night on 45th St:

The man was walking home March 27 around 3 a.m. when two men approached him at 45th and Wallingford Ave. The suspects told him he had a very nice PSP and Nike shoes. The victim told the men that they could buy their own stuff. […] The suspect then allegedly punched the victim in the face. The other suspect grabbed him and punched him in the back of the head.

Afternoon Arts and Crafts and Summer Camps

This past week was the beginning of the spring session of Arts and Crafts Classes at Fremont Community School. This is a drop-in program offered Monday through Thursday. Taught by Julia Freeman, a professional artist with training and recognition both home and abroad. Originally from Kansas City, Freeman now lives here in Seattle and recently received her MFA in Fibers from UW. Freeman developed this arts program from the ground up and takes pride in working with each child to bring out their innate talents.

Walmart comes to Wallingford

The Walmart Corporation announced an agreement today to purchase the building and grounds of Wallingford’s Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Avenue N) along with the adjoining Meridian Park. They plan to open their 5,783rd store there, the first inside Seattle city limits. In addition to their standard electronics, music, furniture, toys and home accessories, the “supercenter” will also feature  produce, baked goods, a deli and other grocery items.

Initial neighborhood reactions were mixed. Ron Waldman, head of the Meridian School, presently housed at the Good Shepherd Center, sees both benefits and drawbacks.
