If we had cable TV…or any kind of TV for that matter, we imagine we’d have a better idea what this new mural on the side of the Milano Pizza / Slave to the Needle building on 45th St NE / 4th Ave NE is all about:

Ah yes. Adult Swim! Thanks Jordan!
… Jordan?
And I’d think that big block of text in the lower right would have hinted the Adult Swim part…
Does this advertising have a permit?
Is Adult Swim operating within the building?

After seeing a glut of billboards pop up in neighborhoods, the city in 1993 passed a tough billboard ordinance that grandfathered in existing freestanding billboards but barred the total number of billboards from rising.
While not freestanding, a recent cluster of wall ads violates another requirement of the sign ordinance. Though the law set no limit on the number of ads on the sides of buildings, it required the ads to promote a business or a product sold or produced in the building.
Tom, Why not just call the city and ask? Or would you rather just complain here and not actually do anything about it?
@John re: Jordan…http://www.wallyhood.org/about/
@Chris Ah, here I thought you were replying to me.
Thanks John- you sound bright, how about instead of complaining about my complaining, why don’t you give me the number?
Remember that episode of Star Trek where the Enterprise and the Gorn were fighting, and then they flew into the airspace of the Metrons, who hate violence so much that the disable both ships and force Kirk and the lizard captain had to fight hand-to-hand as proxies for their ships?
I love that episode.
@Tom http://tinyurl.com/y5x2vz6 Anything else I can do for you?
I actually appreciated Tom’s input above. I found it informative and didn’t think it was complaining any more than many of the comments on this site. I’ve learned a lot of useful info from these comments and encourage more. Don’t be discouraged by those who have nothing more useful to contribute than to make snide comments about….nothing. Not sure if Chris W was trying to point this out with his link above but, the About page says “Our goal is to foster community and communication between Wallingford residents…” Tom’s comments work towards this goal. John’s don’t.
Thanks John. Per your direction, I have submitted a request for information from DPD.
If there is a concern it should show up here:

As far as I can tell [Adult Swim] is an extension of TimeWarnerTurner

Why didn’t you just ask the guys who were putting it up, instead of taking the time to snap a photo, post it to the web, and blog about it?
The photo was sent in to the blog. In any case, I actually did know that it was an ad for Adult Swim and that’s it’s a TV show. I just don’t know who Steve Brude is or why he’s getting a cake. I wouldn’t figure sign painters would either.
I don’t know why people complain about these things. There are so many terrible eye-sores out there, while people are afraid that their neighborhoods are being destroyed. Does the fact that Time Warner owns ADULT SWIM change the feelings of people in Wallingford? I’m sure that it does. I guess only advertising which is connected to super corporate and/or oppressive conglomerates and monopolies such as Clear Channel are invited into such “forward thinking” and “green” communities. Why doesn’t anybody question these no talent works of “art” from that wingnut “HENRY”? His work is terrible and he paints it everywhere.
This mural was painted with aerosol and much of it was done freehand. It’s incredibly impressive to me. When people have been fortunate enough to achieve lives which aren’t wrought with the same problems as those less fortunate, they’ll always be sure to find and create new ones.
If anyone really wants to see more about this mural and about the show that it’s promoting, CLICK HERE

Ouch. I hope that it is not only the “people in Wallingford” who feel that the corporate control of our media, elections, government is a problem. I am sorry if you might not be “fortunate enough” financially or intellectually to share this concern. Frontline produced a pretty good introduction to the issue: “The Merchants of Cool.”

Tom–
I don’t get you’re point or how you are attempting to disprove mine. You seem like you are on an immediate witch hunt to find out if it’s legal and then to report it. Then you mention that Time Warner owns it, as if that changes something. It’s not your building. Why does it even matter to you if it’s there? It sounded to me as if you felt that you were worried that it wasn’t placed on a billboard in a designated advertising area. If nothing else, this is one promotion that employs local artists and channels their talents in a more constructive way than vandalism. Meanwhile, there are tons of other buildings in the area with murals that I find much more distasteful and unattractive, so my question is why everyone is so supportive of those.
I find it hard to believe that anyone would have such an issue with knowing that there is a painting of John C. Reilly on the side of a building that they need to take time out of their days to research local ordinances and try to put a stop to it, if they had real day to day issues. The fact that you have this sort of free time on your hands and seem so adamant about putting an end to it, is a privilege. I can just see you asking a homeless man to move out of your way so that you can obtain the accurate measurements to fill out your detailed report as a “concerned citizen”. Who are you protecting if you get this removed? Your cause isn’t noble. If you want to protect your community or affect it positively, there are things that you could do which are a lot more meaningful. If you have to search something out to even find out if it’s illegal, just so that you can complain about it, it seems like nothing more than pathetic attempt to feed into your own self importance. Maybe they’ll give you a sticker and a plastic deputy sheriff badge.
Please point out the typo. I will be disappointed if you don’t
Folks, please. Disagreeing with someone = OK. Personal attacks = Not OK.
I love the mural and it is a great deterrent to graffiti which has been an ongoing problem in this area for over a decade now. Graffiti artists tend to defer to other artists and this mural is a “Class Act” compared to the graffiti garbage of the last 10 to 15 years. This mural is cool and colorful even if you are detracted by its “so called” Corporate implications.
You guys are idiots
I love the mural too and was mildly curious to know what ‘adult swim’ was. didn’t matter to me before or after I found out (by following the above link), I enjoy the artwork so much more than the graffiti.
On the other hand, I’d have been a lot less amused had a certain politician, the one whose artless logo was plastered ad nauseum on every vertical, flat surface between Lake Washington and the Puget Sound in 2008, had been able to glam on to that space too. Wonder if there’s a way to keep THIS mural without opening the door to THAT one??
Well the mural got painted out. I guess Tom will be happy? It looks like the blank wall has been rediscovered by the vandals.
