Good news on the Mutt Mitt front. I’ve just found out that our request has been approved and a work order was submitted this week for the return of our Mutt Mitt dispenser. In the next week or two, it will be installed at the NW entrance of Wallingford Playfield at 43rd and Woodlawn. For now, the Parks Department will regularly check the dispenser and re-stock as necessary. I’ve agreed to follow up with them in a few months to see how it’s all going.
Please still continue to bring your own plastic bags to pick up after Fido and Fidette. The Mutt Mitts are pricey little resources, especially in our current economic climate, and are intended for emergencies. Thanks to all community members who have participated in the ongoing (and sometimes very lively) discussions on maintaining our neighborhood gem of a park for all to enjoy.
P.S. Have you met any of the great Parks staff who help maintain Wallingford Playfield? I’ll be doing a spotlight interview in the near term so stay tuned!
Why go with Mutt Mitts if they are expensive? Marymoor used to have rolls of produce bags donated by Safeway or QFC. QFC owes us one after the Wallingford Municipal Airport (WMA) fiasco.
Thank you, Sharon!
Great reporting, Sharon, especially “under fire.” I understand the urge to go to solution (Mutt Mitts), I do it all the time. That being said, having a dog feces bag dispenser at the playfield (a SParksRec term) end of the park basically invites/welcomes off-leash dogs into the park. The challenge is that when dogs run “free,” their feces fly out and about, prohibited by Seattle Municipal Code, not to mention tearing up the field during its resting period and beyond. I assume this will all go away when Hamilton Middle School is re-opened and the Seattle School District sees the inherent dangers in having roving dogs invade school property, but that is half a year away. In the meantime, let’s hope that the Good Leash People will rise to the occasion and challenge the off-leash folks to obey existing law and also work to get their objectives met, legally, and elsewhere.
Love dogs, love leashed dogs, wish their poop was collected in something biodegradable.
All are good efforts, and it is wonderful all the work you have done, to benefit the park, but in the long run the park is going to hard to keep a “Gem” until a sensible solution to the increased dog population in Wallingford is solved. (See previous topic threads)
Thank you Sharon! I agree w/Pollyanna and I wish the bags were biodegradable. But hey, it’s no different than the bags most folks use. At the shelter we re-purposed plastic bags from the grocery store/newspaper, etc.
We went to the park today and we didn’t see or step in any poop. Yay!
This is very good. Maybe if the city set up an online donation box for dog owners to keep this alive we could see these boxes again at Meridian park as well. I would donate to something like that. By the way I am a dog owner as well.

Really?
Mutt Mitts are degradeable….. they are intended to help breakdown the landfills. Visit http://www.Mutt Mitt.com
