We just heard word through the “bartender grapevine” that Goldie’s (2121 N 45th St) shut their doors for good last night. There’s some speculation going around as to what might have occurred, but we’re still searching for the facts. According to tipsters, there are no lights on or customers inside the bar tonight. Who has the scoop?
If this is true, I’m guessing there won’t be too many tears shed by their near neighbors over that news! It’s a great location with the potential to be so much more than a dive bar. Hope we finally get something nice in there.
Random trivia: Goldie’s was one of Nintendo’s test sites for the original Donkey Kong arcade game.
Goldie’s used to have such delicious onion rings. Sad – they were definitely Lesser Seattle (in a good way).
Rob: I have an arcade-game magazine from around 1985 (Joystik) with an article about gaming in Seattle that includes photos of Goldie’s full of arcade games back in the heyday of quarter-sucking.
I was just wondering that as well. While walking home last night, we saw a piece of paper on the door that just said “Closed.” Wasn’t sure if that meant for the night or for good. If it’s true, here’s my wish list for what will replace it:
1. BBQ joint (with veggie options, of course)
2. Pho
3. Gym (but that’s just because I live a few doors down and need a really low barrier to entry when it comes to working out)
4. A dive bar with darts and pool (wait…)
No more gyms! Yikes, there’s 3 in the ‘hood, not counting the martial arts studios, yoga halls, and Greenlake is like 10 feet away! 🙂
Now Pho, that I can get behind.. Pho and a decent sushi place.
There are three gyms in Wallingford? Ugh, my can’t-work-out-because excuses are really dwindling. Busted!
I can see it now:
Bagley Lofts newly urban tenant vs. Goldie’s.
“Goldie’s is too much of a dive for this neighborhood. We want nice bars like they have in Bellevue and Kirkland. This kind of place only attracts riffraff and has no social value!”
Long live Goldie’s. I just hope it is not too late for some one to reopen it soon -as “Goldie’s on 45th” (dive or not).
My parthner and I bought the place and hope to have it reopened in about a month.
It will still be a sports bar but I do not think many will still consider it a dive bar.
We also own The rat and Raven on the Ave and my partner owns the newly remodled Clever Dunne’s on Capitol Hill.
John Scott Tynes –
I’d love to see some of those 1985 photos of Goldies’s arcade!!!
Too bad there aren’t any back issues of Joystik on Ebay!!
