If you’re interested in helping to choose some new playground structures for the McDonald School lot on 54th and Latona, then you’ll want to make note of a few upcoming dates: The Friends of McDonald School is hosting a workshop on Tuesday, March 23, from 7-9 p.m., at Green Lake Elementary School. Everyone is welcome.
Funding for the new playground equipment will come from two grants by the Department of Neighborhoods’ Matching Fund and the King County Youth Sports Facilities Grants Program, as well as the generosity from community members and employer donations. Seattle Schools will also provide support.
Friends of McDonald School will host another workshop, also at Green Lake Elementary, on April 27, from 7-9 p.m., where a design from one of several playground equipment vendors will be chosen. They’ll also be seeking volunteers later this spring to help install the equipment on June 26-27.

Wasn’t there a new structure installed at the McDonald site just recently?
Yes, last year. This is phase two, and they’ve received $28,000 in grants to add additional equipment. According to their website, these are some of the proposed phase two improvements:
1. Additional playstructures for younger children, to be placed near the new play structure installed in 2009 (southeast side of the east play field)
2. New components to complete the 10 year-old blue-and-green playstructure for older children (located at the center-east side of the east play field)
3. A tree
4. Limited repair of pavement damage on the playfield
5. Fence improvements
6. A game table for chess and checkers
Since we may not have enough funds to make all of these improvements, we plan to establish specific priorities through a series of community workshops similar to the Phase I community workshops we conducted in the winter of 2009.
