It’s not too late to register for this Saturday’s Strike Out Hunger Bowl-a-thon in support of Wallingford-based social services organization and food bank Solid Ground:
The economic downturn over the past two years has forced an increasing number of local families to rely on food banks to make ends meet. Last year, food bank visits in Seattle increased dramatically, with some locations experiencing as much as 50% increases in visits. In fact, there has been an 82% increase in the number of families with infants (ages 0-2) who rely on food banks to feed their children.
There’s been a lot of chatter in comments and in the Forums about whether it’s useful to give to panhandlers and others asking for money on the streets. Whatever your opinion on that, it’s definitely more effective to give to a group like Solid Ground, who can provide what those without money need more cost-effectively than they can themselves.
Visit the Bowl-a-thon web site for more info, and if you can’t make it, consider making a gift directly to Solid Ground. They’re doing something about it.
