We were peddling up Wallingford Ave the other day, dragging our tow of delicious Essential Bakery dumpster-diver bread when we noticed this beauty towering over the sidewalk. The beauty we’re referring to is the the piece of art, not the artist, Marvin Oliver, standing next to it (who’s not bad-looking, mind you, but not as stunning as his work).
The piece is suggestive of an oil drill, perhaps, pulling power and myth from the earth. The images on the side, we were told, are modeled on petroglyphs that were found in the Columbia River Basin before they were submerged by dams.
Take a tour of our neighborhood art gallery, this stop between N 37th St and N 38th on Wallingford Ave.
Marvin is an amazing artist and I am delighted to find out he lives in our neighborhood! It makes me love Wallingford/Greenlake even more!
I get my hair cut across the street and when I first saw the sculpture, I thought it was a giant hummingbird feeder full of nectar! Upon closer inspection, I realized a) I may need glasses; and b) it was truly an amazing work of art.
