For the entire month of March, Wallingford’s Hollow Earth Radio is hosting Magma Festival 2010. This city wide festival brings together 54 acts spread across 10 shows at 9 all ages venues.
Kicking off on March 5th at The Vera Project in the Seattle Center. This show brings together northwest acts: Alaskas, Grr, Deception Pass, and Thao (of Thao + The Get Down Stay Down).
This yearly event serves as a critical fundraiser to help cover HER’s operating expenses. With a mission to support under represented northwest musicians HER is always seeking out new and interesting music, stories and sounds to share. They also offer classes and workshops such as January’s Field Recording Workshop. HER’s investment in our community makes Magma Fest a perfect opportunity to see some talented artists, explore new music and support a valuable community resource.
While Wallingford proper isn’t hosting a concert (maybe somebody should work on that for next year). We can hop over to three nearby venues:
The Mine in Ballard has The Thrown Ups, the pre-Mudhoney concoction featuring Mark Arm and Steve Turner, on March 6th. Joining them is eight other acts poised for a long night of garage, grunge, anti-grunge, experimental, lo-fi spectacular-ness.
On March 13th, at the The Fremont Abby, Sir Richard Bishop, of the Sun City Girls, performs. Fresh off his European tour Bishop will be joined that night by surrealist Arrington de Dionyso, and punk accordionist Jason Webley
Next we head over to the Henry Art Gallery. The gallery will open its doors, on March 19th, to a special Radio8Ball Show hosted by Andras Jones with musical guest Karl Blau, from Anacortes, and Celebrity Skype-in: Khaela Maricich of The Blow
The Mine also get the honor of closing out the festival on March 27th with the Eruption Show, a special sampling of nine of HER’s favorite local bands: Heatwarmer, Contraband Countryband, Why I Must be Careful, i, Cordyceps, Fever Break, i hate you, just kidding, Glacier Saint, and Midtown Dickens. A Garth Brooks Cover Band/Supergroup known as Ropin’ The Wind will wrap up the night.
A full schedule and ticket information can be found here. Hollow Earth is offering a special right now – a $50 donation gets you a festival pass for all 10 shows.
Thanks for the writeup! We’d love to have hyperlocal shows in the future… anyone know any good BIG Wallingford spaces for music and the like?
