You may want to mention the need to clear out street gutters and drains to avoid flooding those downhill. Only takes a minute or two. I often take a small rake on my walks with the dog.
Ah, now so this reminds me. I have seen twice now someone cleaning the sidewalks in front of the building across from Archie McPhees (where Bastyr, Beso Del Sol, etc. used to be.) And by cleaning I mean blowing the leaves into the street. Some old guy who cleaned the sidewalks in front of Wallingford Center used to do this too, but I haven’t seen him recently. That guy actually used a hose to spray off the leaves, but I digress. I’ve seen other business owners doing the same thing. The problems is that of course they don’t collect the leaves. They just leave them in the street apparently contributing to our downhill neighbors’ water overabundance. I’m also pretty sure leaving the leaves, etc. there is illegal.
Maybe the Chamber of Commerce and/or the Community Council can talk to the local business about this? It’s not every business. I’ve also seen people at Taco Time and the old Tweedy and Pop location doing the right thing.
I’ve seen that too. Very un-neighborly of our business friends to do that. The leaves should be racked and taken away to compost.
Thanks for bringing that up, Rob!
Illegal ? As you know property owners do not really own the sidewalk area. The city does make them responsible and with the responsibility comes a list of dos and don’t (mostly don’ts). Only trees approved by the city (through the mask of the department of transportation) can planted in those locations. Sometimes through the planning department they require the property owner plant tree.
While it would be kind of a business owner to compost, it should not be illegal. I would go as far as saying the city is co responsible for the leaves and should help out by picking them up from the curb.
