Our neighbor Olivier called to let us know that he spotted four police cars blocking off an area around 40th St NE near I-5 Sunday morning. When he asked what was going on, he was told someone had found a hand grenade.
We’ve dropped a line to our contacts at the SPD and will let you know if and when we learn more.
Update: Mark Jamieson of the Seattle Police Department responded:
A road crew working yesterday picking up trash discovered a plastic bag with what appeared to be a grenade inside it. This was shortly before noon. SPD responded, along with our bomb squad, and recovered the grenade. It was not live, it was inert, so it was never in danger of going off. Hope that helps!
according to another neighbor, police referred to it as an “errant hand grenade” and it was located by telephone pole at 4th Ave NE and N 40th.
Thank you for illuminating us about this…I saw the lineup of police cars and the yellow “police line” tape when I was on my way down to the Mariners’ game, and was very curious as to what was going on. Given that heavy law enforcement presence, and since we live just up 4th NE from the scene, I am relieved to learn that it was merely (fake) unexploded ordnance, as opposed to some sort of ghastly violent crime!
