A couple weeks back, we ran a short story about an interesting piece of public art. In the comments section, someone mentioned that they passed it on their way to RoRo, someone else asked how the food was, and a couple of folks responded that it was excellent.
“RoRo?” we thought to ourselves. “What’s Roro?”
Somehow, we managed to let two and a half years pass since their opening and never have tried RoRo BBQ (3620 Stone Way N). This was an omission we felt obligated, as responsible members of the Wallingford community, to rectify, so last Sunday, we packed Baby Z into his car seat and ambled on over there.
Now, you should know that Mrs. Wallyhood, while she will be quick to remind you that she is definitely not a Texan (she was born in upstate New York, where she spent her early years and many a formative summer), she did live there for many years, so she knows a little something about barbecue.
Truth is, though, it’s not necessary to know much about barbecue to know that this barbecue is awesome. We stuck to the straightforward pulled pork sandwiches, with Mr. Wallyhood opting for the Deluxe version (topped with cole slaw and pickles). Both sandwiches were juicy, rich and flavorful without adding sauce, but how can you resist trying all the sauces they have to offer when there are so many. The sandwich came with two sides: Mr. Wallyhood opted for the succotash, which was a tangy, crisp mix of corn, edamame and other veggies, and the corn muffin, which was a bit dry and overly hard. Mrs. Wallyhood tried the sweet potato fries, which were delicious, and the mac and cheese, which was a bit bland, an opinion shared by some Yelp writers.
The place itself has a great cowboy kitsch thing going and the service was honest and friendly (although she did seem unexpectedly annoyed that some other diners re-arranged the tables to accommodate their size).
All in all, very much worth a trip back. In fact, Baby Z has been talking about it ever since: “Rorororororororororo!” he’ll yell at us every morning.
The mac and cheese is weak. The corn muffins are good if they’re fresh. Try the potato salad. It’s some of the best I’ve ever had.
RoRo usually has a coupon in the monthly Valpak mailing with a buy one get one free for dinner and lunch!
They always run a coupon in the Community Shopper so keep your eye out for that!
they have amazing cubed sweet potatoes right now… baked in brown sugar, with paprika. deee-lish. I will say, the gal at the counter can be sweet, but definitely has her quirky pet-peeves.
I like their mac & cheese, simple but comforting, and always order it!
Perhaps I had a singularly bad experience, but the one time I went to Roro’s (thankfully with a coupon) the ribs were terrible. I grew up on BBQ, and this just didn’t qualify. The meat mas mealy and tasteless, and the sides were mediocre at best. I am an enthusiastic carnivore, but I didn’t even finish the meal.
