It says something that no less than five people e-mailed us today to make sure we knew that the free Wallingford Wurst Festival is happening this weekend, and not one of those people are involved in putting it on, just excited attendees.
That said, we’re not quite sure whether Sara was encouraging us, warning us or threatening us when she said “Wait ’til next year when Baby Z will want to go through the bouncy house at least 20 times!”
From their web site:
The Great Wallingford Wurst Festival is an “Octoberfest” style end-of-summer celebration that takes place in September at St. Benedict School. Now in its 27th year, the festival started as a small fund-raiser for the school. Today the festival brings more than 10,000 visitors to the Wallingford neighborhood in one weekend. The Wurst Festival features rides, an array of delicious foods, games for kids of all ages, craft booths, homemade sweets, a book sale, a Biergarten and a raffle, plus live entertainment on an outdoor stage.
It’s a carnival, and right in our own backyard! (Assuming, of course, that the St. Benedict’s School, 4811 Wallingford Ave N, just up from the QFC is your back yard.) The whole thing starts at 4 pm on Friday afternoon, although Mayor “I’m still the mayor” Nickels officially kicks it off with Father Steve and Maureen Blum at 7 pm.
See the Wurst Festival web site for all the deets, including music line-up and times.
I’m bummed, no Fremont Philharmonic in the line-up this year 🙁
Crowds, reduced parking in our neighborhood, slow traffic… and I love it.
I’ve been living within a few blocks of the WWF (no, not the one with The Warrior) for the last 15 years, and it’s one of the things we look forward to the most. Everyone’s always very pleasant, the music is fun, and I can get backyard grilled hamburgers without lighting the briquets myself. Plus, it’s obvious that the kids are having a blast.
Kudos to everyone involved who makes the event so smoothly.
PS How did Baby Z enjoy it?
Sara’s right. Bouncy houses = kid crack. Nate and his buddy burned through 30 tickets and then the attendant let them go in a few extra times for free since it didn’t look like anyone could really stop them.
