Kelly sent in the following super-sweet note:
I would like to recognize the efforts of a somewhat anonymous person who has taken the responsibility to organize our community to put crossing flags in Wallingford. I know who he is (but won’t tell), but would like everyone to know that all of the flags and flag holders that you see along N. 40th St. have been put up, and paid for, by individuals who are concerned about the dangerous traffic conditions along this arteriole. As one who lives at the corner of what I believe is a particularly dangerous neighborhood crosswalk, my husband and I have spent hundreds of dollars making the containers and stocking them with crossing flags…only to have them disappear one by one, even after we started starting adding the cross section address on the flag. “Rants” to those individuals who keep “misplacing” our flags. We are happy, however, to see that after one particularly assertive phone call to Seattle Metro, the busses will actually stop when someone is standing IN THE CROSSWALK with a raised flag.
Thanks, anony-flag-man! There’s actually a nice history of our crossing flags here, including information on who to contact if you want to get some put on your corner. Maybe some folks in other neighborhoods would like some, as well?
Yes, Thanks to anony-flag-man. That can be a dangerous street to cross!!
I also want to thank you kindly, as my son’s school bus stop is there as well.
what is it with seattlite that think trafic will stop for cars, you wait for a break then go
@anonymous What is it with folks from elsewhere that think that everything should be done the way they did it back where they came from? When I go to Rome, I expect them to speak Italian. When you go to Seattle, expect cars to yield to pedestrians. It’s part of our culture and I like it.
Isn’t it a sure sign that we need crosswalks painted on 40th street when neighbors are putting up crossing flags? I love the flags–and would also love crosswalks!
I walk and bike on 40th street almost every day and it seems to be the most dangerous street in Wallingford.
Does anyone know what the process is to have a crosswalk painted? Any experience with this or pointers on where to start?
Can we at least get one in front of Irwins?! 🙂
