In addition to Wallingford Art Walk, today is Wallingford Farmer’s Market (3 – 7 pm, Wallingford Center). We thought we’d share our favorite morning recipe with you, just in time for you to pick up the ingredients.
There’s no better way to start a day than a good, rich smoothie. Everyone has their own recipe. This is ours:
The key to this smoothie is that it’s got something a bit different every time you make it, so you never get bored of it. The other key is that it’s made out of fruit you’ve frozen, so you can buy fresh fruit when it’s fresh, freeze it and then have it whenever you want. The third key is that it’s awesome. There is no fourth key. Three is more than enough.
First, get yourself a melon (honeydew or cantelope), cube it and tuck it in the freezer. Do the same with whatever other fruit you pick up at the market: peaches, berries, plums, whatever strikes your fancy. Except apples. Don’t try apples. The skin makes the whole thing kind of weird and grainy.
Then, when you wake up, you’re going to put the following into a blender:
- 4 – 6 cubes of frozen melon
- 1 banana (if your bananas start to go brown, peel them and freeze them for smoothies)
- Some other fruit, fresh or frozen: peaches, berries, plums, watermelon, whatever you’ve got. Start with a healthy dose of berries, though. You can’t go wrong with berries. Maybe those packets of frozen berries you get at Trader Joe’s.
- 2 cups orange juice
- 2 large spoonfuls yogurt
- 2 spoonfuls cottage cheese (this is optional: it makes the whole thing thicker, almost chewy)
- 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast (this is also optional: gives the smoothie a slightly musty flavor and will make it thicker, but gives you a noticeable energy boost from all the b-vitamins)
Blend. Drink. Go back fore more
Jason Brzozwy of Tilth is giving the cooking demonstration from 4 – 5 pm today at the Farmer’s Market. He will not be making my smoothie. If he does, though, we will name it the Brzozwy Smoothie in his honor.
