One of our biggest gripes about Seattle is the lack of good street food. You visit so many other cities, and there are vendors selling delicious food on street corners wherever you go. Seattle? Nada lotta.
Thus, it’s good to see at least one spot open here in Wallingford: Saucisse Kabir is selling hot dogs in front of Babalu on the corner of 45th St and Wallingford Ave on Wednesdays (to coincide with the farmer’s market and art walk) and weekends (to coincide with nibbly shoppers during the day and hungry drunks at night).
Recognizing our duty as intrepid reporters, we “took one for the team” and sampled the wares this past Saturday: a thick, foot-long dog with sauteed onions and cream cheese. The report: delicious. The onions were especially good (Nabil tells us its his own personal recipe of spices) and the dog itself was tasty and huge (which, at $5, it better be).
While there, we were introduced to Michael, the owner of Babalu, who…how to put this…expressed his displeasure with our coverage of his establishment. It’s true that we have not been glowing in our recommendations and it’s also true that we should have called him and asked for comment before running the story. We offered to print whatever information he sent us in response, an offer we will abide by. So Michael, if you’re reading this: let us know what we got wrong, and we’ll let our readers know.
Yay for hot dogs! I thought it was a Babalu thing, so I had planned on avoiding it..
any veggie dogs?
Is the guy who owns Babalu the same one who owned Wonder Bar (the last bar in that location)? The owner was kinda creepy and always hanging around there, too.
The only thing you neglected in your previous coverage was to emphasize how little the neighborhood cares for his bridge-and-tunnel vanity project. I haven’t heard of a single Wallingford resident who actually wants to spend time there. Beyond that, I haven’t seen him do a single thing to engender goodwill. His main goal seemed to only be to generate noise complaints.
I am glad to see the hot dog cart, though, despite the location. With Nabil, Rancho Bravo, and Dick’s, we’re doing pretty well for late-night food options.
Checked in with Nabil tonight: Yes, he’s got veggie dogs.
@Jason – you’d probably appreciate that about 2 weeks ago, 2 Seattle PD cruisers and a motorcycle cop had a familiar black Rolls pulled over in front of my office building on Dexter 😉
thanks for the tip.
Dogs for drunks, plain and simple. Mommy (Anna) owns everything including the old black car but Nabil said the dog actually bought buns once. QFC has experienced shrinkage of hot dog bun stock so I wonder if the wonderdawg is lifting buns. Wouldn’t put it past him. BTY Wallywood, you got your facts straight that place is a hive for heathens. Felons who run bars with failed tummy tucks.
